I recently bought a Yamaha electric violin and was trying to get the best sound with the piezo pickups. I bought a Zoom G1 Four since it was small and lightweight but would give me some effects options as well as headphones. The sound was ok. I then used a preamp (LR Baggs Para DI), and that improved the sound again. My next thought was my ToneDexter (I had bought it for mandolin but never used it). The ToneDexter would give me a nice preamp, headphone and balanced DI output, some improved feedback resistance, etc., but I wasn’t sure what to do with an electric violin that couldn’t be mic’d to create a wavemap.

Fortunately, my first search showed that there was a solution! The Pickup Test sells ToneDexter wavemaps for the YEV-104 violin! The wavemaps are based on four high-end mics at 12” and 24”. $30 for a set.

I’m very happy with my YEV-104 through the ToneDexter with the Pickup Test wavemaps (and the Zoom G1 Four for a bit of chorus and delay)!

I'm glad you like the ToneDexter! There's been a little discussion about that on FiddleHangout, see . I did a little internet search and found this URL about the violin wavemaps: It includes several youtube videos, at least one of which includes the YEV-104. I own a YEV-104 and have a Fishman Aura preamp with violin "images".

What I'm most interested in for an effect is a fancy reverb pedal like an Electro-Harmonix Oceans 11. I do have the THR-5A desktop amplifier, which has chorus, delay and hall reverb. I looked at the list of Zoom G1/G1x Four effects, and it does appear to have some interesting reverb, especially for the price.

I’ve been considering higher-end effects like the HX Stomp and HX Effects, but my immediate goal for the YEV-104 was small and light and something to power headphones. I can see that the G1 Four would be a lot of fun with an electric guitar! For $89, I’m impressed, and I love the sound of the YEV-104 with just touches of an effect or two. Unfortunately, advantages of “small” and “light” are lost a bit when you need to use a preamp too.
