A few years ago I'd host a 'flash jam'.. that is, I'd send out an email saying "Having a jam in TWO hours at the park. Be there or be square".. I called those jams 'flash jams'.. Now-a-days... a friend has started something Similar... "Jam in the park..." out in the open, good breeze.. wear a mask, bring a chair.. twice a week...same park...
You Can, Will, and SHOULD (not yelling).. do what you want, but Hey, What a great idea...!! I told my friend to put me on the short list..! (no, not  just because I'm short)..!!! How are your jam opportunities changing with the times?

I just finished a 2 1/2 hour flash jam with my fiddle playing buddy at the park.  He's played the guitar for 40 years, the fiddle for 6-7 years (?), I think he can play mando (but I've never heard him) and he plays in a steel drum band which is an amazing thing to listen to.  He is also very good on the harmonica.

He took up the banjo in the last year or so on a banjo a friend gave him.   Yesterday, he asked if I'd play the fiddle along with him playing the banjo.   I played the fiddle for the whole time and he played banjo along with me.   He's never had a banjo lesson but, he has so much experience with playing music that he's getting the hang of clawhammer, old time music playing really quickly.

We played tunes I knew from my 8 years of playing banjo and and learned on the fiddle and, as went played each tune, he got dialed in and did a really good job.   It was  a lot of fun and I have never played the fiddle that long in one sitting, ever.   I got pretty tired after 2 1/2 hours but had a blast.

Seems like most of the jams I have been in the last few years have been very short notice... less than 2 hours... just a text message "tunes?"

It must be nice to live close enough to players who have the free time that you can just throw something together like that. smiley

Most of my mates live at least 40 minutes away and have familial obligations.

Edit to erase a string of question marks (that never happened with the old site and the emojis were better). And AGAIN to remove a photo. WTF?

Still scheduled weekly here. I wish that I could do flash jams. Seems you can't do stuff with others without a few days or more of notice.

I am doing my first real jam this afternoon with good friends... it will be outside and a distance apart, but we all play various instruments besides the fiddle so we can take turns backing each other up.... I am excited to say the least

"...a good time was had by all."

Just 3 of us. And - as expected - none of us have been playing / practicing regular since March.  So, the first few tunes were a warm up. I had to remind myself that I can play the fiddle.  But the end of the session we were pretty much back on track.

We are making a commitment to a weekly routine, rotate meeting places, playing outdoors.

I'm encouraged.

I joined a second contra band and we've been getting together weekly for the month, on a screened porch with masks. Getting cold though, so not sure what our next step will be.
