Multitrack recording where I'm playing: Fiddle (GDGD), Clawhammer Banjo (Pisgah Woodchuck, gDGBD), Martin HD-28 Guitar, Cloud NIne Marimbula (bass). Not certain which version of Grey Eagle this is, a version played by Rayna Gellert (though hers is faster and in A).

Nice job playing and recording, Dan. Grey Eagle was my favorite tunes when I was heavy into flatpicking, although a different version than the one here. I've recently started working on Manco Snead's Grey Eagle after hearing Foghorn Stringband's recording. Seems Grey Eagle is one of those tunes that has many versions in the OT community...all unique and good IMO. This one you're playing reminds me a bit of Little Brown Jug especially in the A part. Once again, nice job!

Thanks very much. As I mentioned this version I heard from fiddler Rena Gellert’s recording of it. It obviously is much easier to play than some of the other versions of the tune. But you’re right. So many all-time tunes of the same title have so many variations, for example Lady of the lake and Liza Jane each have about 10 different versions with the same title.

Sorry.  It's spelled Rayna Gellert.  That's what happens when you use voice to type rather than keyboard!

This version comes from a recording of Cecil Snow. I call it "Old Grey Eagle" to distinguish it from the others. He tells a story of writing the tune about an eagle, rather than the other versions which were written to commemorate the race horse. It is a great dance tune.

An even earlier source is Bill Evans of Pottawatomie County, OK. His Grey Eagle is the same version, and appears in Marion Thede's Fiddle Book. Though I was not able to find out about Mr. Evans, I did come up with two possibilities. Most of the fiddlers featured by Thede were born prior to 1900, so I think he predates Cecil Snow (1918-1991). Apparently, Mr. Evans told the same story about the tune being about an eagle. Thede notates the coarse (low) as the B part.

I featured the tune for Old-Time TOTW #69 (10/20/19), playing it with my Old-Time family in Albany ,NY, from whom I learned the tune many years ago.
