A local favorite. There is an old fiddler who lives nearby (she's in her 90's). She calls the tune la Valse à Antoine (Antoine's Waltz) - Antoine being her brother. I'm not sure if people around here know the "real" name of the tune.

Nice, Peggy. One of my favorites - I play it on guitar and banjo, and I think I have a sound file around of an attempt on the fiddle. Maybe I'll try to round them up for posting.

That's interesting, Hoodoo...not sure about the origins of that Waltz. Maybe sometime you should try to track down that fiddler and ask her if she knows where it came from.  Maybe she's the one who wrote it!!!!

Fred...hope to hear those selections some time soon!

I need to dig around on my computer. Back when I first heard it, I found information about the tune having come over from Europe to Texas. I had posted the info on ezFolk way back when that site was viable for players. Hopefully, I kept a copy on my computer, somewhere, maybe, I hope.

Here's the Fiddlers Companion entry on Westphalia Waltz as well as the discussion about it on the old ezFolk forum (sadly, no longer in existence).

I've read that people in Westphalia, Texas and Westphalia, Missouri have claimed it.

I think fiddlers everywhere try their best to put a claim on any good fiddle tune...lol...so, who knows?

Dick Barrett used to call it "The Worst Failure Waltz" but he did play it wonderfully
