Attempted scam through Fiddlehangout's classifieds. A supposed buyer contacted me wanted to buy my fiddle (didn't ask any questions about the instrument.). Scammer, (Maria with a Russian surname), said that she would send a certified cashier's for an amount that I was asking for the fiddle plus extra $$ to cover a "mover" (not shipping) who would pick up the instrument and take it to her in Tampa. The scam works like this. The cashier's check is phony, but supposedly your bank will cash it if you have the funds to back it up. You then send the so-called "mover" the extra money the scammer added on to the phony check. The mover never shows, the check bounces, and the bank holds you responsible for the entire amount. You still have your instrument, but you're out the difference the scammer told you to send to the "mover". I didn't fall for it. It seemed fishy, but it turns out this is fairly common scam, after reading a few sad stories of people who fell for it. Bottom line: if something in a deal where you're posting something for sale looks a little off (like whoever heard of a "mover" transporting a sale item??), it's probably a scam. This scammer might hit others on this website. Craigslist is a favorite target as well.
I got one too. Here is the text:
Nice pics... I am very much impressed with the pics, and as a matter of fact, I will be grateful to make the payment via certified cashier check. Now, an extra fees will be added to your asking price, which is meant for shipping and insurance, all you need to do immediately you receive the check is to get it cashed, deduct your asking price from the amount sent to you, and then get the rest sent to the shipper (picker) immediately the shipper receives the fund, he/she will in return get in touch with you and arrangement will be made on how and when the item will be picked.
So, if OK with the arrangement, do kindly get back to me with the following details below.
As soon as theses details are sent the check will be mailed out to you.
"Certified cashier check" from a genuine real money bank. Syntax is just not quite right, is it?
Thanks for the heads up.
