A thought recently occurred to me that not being a kid anymore, I might be headed to that big hoedown in the sky someday. It also occurred to me that I can't think of a single person to leave my left-handed fiddles to. The last (and only) guy I met who could play my fiddle was back in 1985, and I haven't seen him since. I've even forgotten his name.
I'd hate to have my fiddles re-converted back to right-handed after all the trouble and expense I went to over my lifetime to turn them into as authentic left-handers as possible.
Because of the internet, it should be easy to form some sort of left-handed fiddler/violinist club or something to where we could keep in touch, buy, sell and trade instruments among ourselves, etc., right?
Any southpaws here? Let's get started!

I think his name is Tristin Baker. He's the fiddler in the very popular Baker Family.

While i am left handed, i am not severely so. Hence, i guess i don't qualify. I'm good with that, thanks.

Then there's this guy:

No wait, he plays over the bar. He's also passed.

Then there's:

He plays over the bar, but he's still kickin!

Hi there,
Nice idea.

Please pardon a couple of newby questions here, but:

1) Other than the strings being strung opposite, what constitutes a left handed fiddle?

2) What does "playing over the bar" mean?

Thanks, y'all.

A left-handed fiddle will also have the bass bar and sound post switched..

Ah! That makes sense, Lee. Thanks! What about the "playing over the bar"?

Playing a right handed fiddle left handed. Like how Albert King plays the guitar - strung for a righty.

Thanks, ChickenMan. I saw a video long ago of an elderly gent playing a right-handed fiddle left-handed, and it totally blew me away.

It's not playing over the "bar," it's playing over the "bass." Not uncommon. I can play either way, but over the bass is my choice. I think there have been efforts to form lefty clubs, but I don't think they have ever gone far. I have one fully left hand fiddle but have only encountered a couple of people who were interested in it. I think if you ever find a buyer it will have to be cheap.

I’m a southpaw. I recently started(this year) my fiddling journey. I thought about playing a righty backwards or converting one. I ended up buying a Zach Hoyt custom left-handed chicken head fiddle built to my choices-Thank You Zach!
