Just in case it is of interest, I thought I should let people know of a truly excellent violinmaker in Merida, capital of the Yucatan. His name is Alberto Soria, and he has 20 years or so experience, including some years in Australia. Take a look at his website for photos of some of his instruments: lauderoalbertosoria.com/ They look better in person.
I just had him do some work on my travel fiddle, a Knilling Bucharest. He cut a new bridge and post, dealt with the neck so it was no longer like a baseball bat but rather nice and comfy, and did a setup. It now plays and sounds way better. He does very nice work. I have to say his charges were reasonable. He turned it around in 24 hours. Just can't beat it.
My only connection with Mr Soria is as a very satisfied customer. I have to say that if I were looking for a really nice bespoke fiddle he is one person I'd talk to. Oh yes, he speaks English fluently.
