I am looking for information on a fiddle I recently acquired. There is no label in the fiddle, only a pencil inscription that reads "MOTS 1974". I would guess it was an amateur maker and 1974 sounds about right for the year. The workmanship is good, it is lined and blocked, the weight seems right and it sounds good. The wood is OK but not highly flamed. I bought it in southern Indiana. Anyone have information on MOTS? Thanks.

I dont remember ever seeing one marked MOTS. IT got me interested in what mots is. And it seems to be a UK term involving testing (motor vehicles) however that being said maybe your fiddle was made in England?

In the banjo world, "MOTS" means "Mother Of Toilet Seat", and refers to faux pearl inlays/resonator/fingerboard overlays and inlays. But I doubt that would apply to your fiddle. There are many very good to excellent bench made violins out there, and due to passage of time, no identification of the maker is ever determined. Perhaps your fiddle is older than 1974, and was just repaired/reconditioned by this mysterious "MOTS" in 1974. Good look, though. It would be interesting to hear what you may be able to find out. Any photos??

I had also thought it might be an acronym, if its all caps, but none in that list seem to fit. I was thinking something like "Middle Ohio Technical School" for example, or "Master Orthophonic Tone Shaping."

Googling "MOTS violin" brought up this site, which is in the UK: philipbrownviolins.co.uk/works...ent-mots/
I still don't know what it means though.

MOT's= "Ministry Of Transport" test....UK speak for anything that needs a check up, or over hauling,.... eg: "i went to the  GP For an  MOT" .......="I went to the Doctor for a health checkup"

If someone checked the emissions on my fiddle it might not pass.

Thanks for the comments. I am attaching pics that could help identify the MOTS fiddle. A condition check in Great Britain could explain the MOTS. The only other mark I can find is the letter "G" in pencil on the neck block.
