Yes, still do on the smaller instruments.

Why let something that works go? Besides it is mush faster adjusting the length of the Sound post with many trial fits.

Yes, I've been known to get an increasingly larger hole in the post using a pointed tool..

I have done it, it works great! But, I have moved on to this high tech sound post inserter: fiddlershop.com/products/violi...r-remover. The traditional tool just gives me all kinds of trouble...

I have seen fiddles with strings still attached to the sound post. never tried it.

I did it a time or two early on, when I didn't have anything better. Kind of hard to twist the post to line it up with the plates. Of course, if the post doesn't fit it doesn't matter.
