Fruit Jar Drinkers “Soldier’s Joy”. Thoughts on how the band’s sound changed when Wilkerson was replaced by McGee?

Less drive.
I much prefer Mr Wilkerson, but the recording setting could have an influence. Kirk played it all random with unequal A and B parts and, what, more notes?

Yeah, it probably did. I think Mr. George was just jamming at one of the band members' houses while Mr. Kirk was worried about getting on and off stage quickly. Also, some of the unevenness comes from the poor editing choices on the part of the filmmakers. He usually played it square, AABB, with the high part first. I wish the editors would have stuck to one shot and let us see him fiddle the whole tune all the way through. I wish it was easier to hear what Mr. George was doing. He had a lot of interesting musical ideas.
