I just strung up my 7th violin about half an hour ago. Still in the raw and all, but I wanted to see if it made any sound. It's an experiment, the top is old redwood and the sides are rosewood. Back and neck are maple and will be stained to match later.
Has more sound than I would think. I walked into the house playing and my wife said "is that your loudest one"? I think it will compare well to the spruce top ones. Time will tell.
Ooh me likey loud. As Gerry Garcia said, "In my world, loud wins."
That violin can only get better. Time will tell, indeed.
To my delicate ears, yes a fiddle can be too loud.. Given the choice between sweet/mellow and loud, I'd choose the former...
Having said that, my favorite fiddle has been described as too quiet for certain musicians...
