What can be done about these spammers?  It is getting out-of-control.  It is extremely annoying.  IP bans?  Write a script blocking new members from posting keywords 'passport' etc?  Phone the internet hosting service for their assistance?  Buy a software update from your forum software company?  Perhaps a simple virus scan of the forum?

I don't feel it's fair to ask our 1 moderator to delete this excessive trash unless we've exhausted all other possibilities.

I'm certainly not in charge, nor do I pay the bills, but I think I speak for most members here by asking for a stronger solution.  (there have been at least two posts lately by various members complaining about this exact problem).

It is exhausting.

Do we have a policy of approving initial posts for new members and if not, is that an option? Will that help the situation? I feel for you Stephanie, it's becoming a twice a day multiple post occurrence.

I know you're working hard on this, Stephanie, but its really a problem for Eric to solve, if he cares about this site.

By which I mean that its one thing (although annoying) if people want to try and sell viagra or even phony passports or birth certificates, but when people hawk counterfeit money I think this site would be shut down pretty quickly if the proper authorities found out about it.

If members just report the spam posts right away, the spammer gets locked and the post gets hidden automatically. Seems like the optimal solution to me.

It's a never ending battle. I appreciate all the work that goes into cleaning up the messes!! Thanks!

Several had made suggestions how to prevent this. The current method seems to work, but I'm guessing it keeps someone busy. Here's another suggestion from another forum (profession related). All posts are reviewed by a moderator before posting. The primary function is to block the spam posts or things that are not relevant to the forum. Other than that, there is no censorship.

Again, thanks to everyone who is working behind the scenes.

Other sites use a probation period for new members. New members could be denied the ability to post links, pictures, etc. for a couple weeks, and a certain number of posts could be required too before the account is unlocked. Either way, I don't see what's so exhausting about dealing with it. Can't the administrator check the site daily and delete spammers accounts?" Isn't' that just a few mouse clicks?

All right. I'll let the forum software handle all of it from now on. I won't bother to delete the hidden threads.

Optimal for whom? Why should I take the time to report spammers? I would never invite guests over to my place and expect them to clean up my messes. That is just plain rude. And it's just going to drive guests away.

I'm not sure how badly I want to keep visiting here. Especally when it's now my(our) job to report spam 10+ times per day.

Right now when I go to the "active topics" list, I see 9 spam posts.  When I click on them, I get a message that they are hidden pending moderator action.  But if they're hidden, why am I seeing their titles in the list of posts?

I have been a moderator and/or admin on many forums over the years, and lived through lots of spam attacks (getting into hundreds of such posts per day).  It sucks, and I know how much work it is to clean it up!  I don't mind helping out here by reporting them when I see them, as long as they disappear from the list when that happens.

You missed my point. This has nothing to do with cooperation and everything to do with responsibility.

We have a majorly abent owner who comes here once a year to sell -shirts. He also accepts donations, gets ad revenue, and charges money for instrument sales. The owner of a revenue generating website should not expect unpaid non-volunteers to clean up the place.

You'll be seeing a lot more. The sight owner said that we have forum software will hide, and the accts will be hidden, easy peasy. I have been dutifully cleaning the sight up every day and even locking accts before they have a chance to spam. I will let the site owner's software handle it from now on.

Really, make it harder to establish a new account. Check out Maestronet. There are rules to getting your account established. Once it is you're good to go. I've never seen spam there. It is really very sloppy to run this site so easily open to spamming. It makes the page look very ugly and uninviting to have all that crap on it. Look at it right now. Ugh.

Yep, pretty bad. I didn't clean anything up, since the forum software is good enough. It is too easy here to jump in with a password and username. Most Facebook groups you need to be permitted in. And maestronet.

If the locked messages bother you when you come to the site, you can try using the "display recent posts" option in forum viewing.  This will show the locked threads the first time you access the site, but the next time you will not see them, as they will not have been updated since your previous visit.

I agree, Stephanie, that you shouldn't need to physically delete these posts, but I'm not sure that Eric has software that does the auto-delete function.  I just logged in again on another tab and notice that the locked threads are still there.

Thanks for all the work you do attempting to keep this site moderated - if I had the time I might still be a moderator, but I get on here maybe once a day.

Ah--now this, sir is a bug! We'll fix it right away. Strange that nobody has reported this before...?

We just fixed the Active Topics page so it won't show hidden (spam) posts. Only moderators see those on other pages, FYI.

Reporting a post as spam takes all of 5 seconds... we moved to this model years ago because it took the load off of the moderators, and helped us catch spammers more quickly.

It's not the only measure we have in place to stop spammers, either--there's a lot going on behind the scenes as well.

Thanks, Eric, this has always been a bug-a-boo for me, so when I was moding here I deleted them, but this fix will sure lighten Mandogryl's load!
