More About Me

Hi Fiddlers,
I've got 5 pages of resume below, but the short and sweet of it is I've been playing music since I was 8 years old and am now 59. I started teaching guitar in 1973, and first began teaching mandolin in around 1980. I started playing fiddle in the same year.

My method is simple; I teach tunes by ear to build repertoire so you can jam and have fun, all the while adding to your technique by choosing tunes that have a novelty to them in terms of key or bowing or fingering to push you forward. I ground you in the key with some scales and exercises so you can pick up the tune by ear and reduce the number of wrong notes.

I'm happy to add theory, chord structure, backup styles, etc.., to those interested. I can provide an mp3 and sheet music if you insist. I do believe in musical literacy, but music is a language and if you can't understand what you hear or speak, then just learning to read and make sounds is meaningless.

I know loads of tunes in many different styles, but am most at home with Irish, Oldtimey, and New England (which em brasses quite a variety all by itself).
I have played professionally and socially and have written over 260 tunes all published and several recorded.
