A great Klezmer tune that I learned from the playing of Miriam Rabson, a fine fiddler in the Boston area. My friend John Chambers is on accordion. The title means "Under the Wedding Canopy."

A very quick demo of Georgia Shuffle bowing, with downbow on the offbeat and upbow everywhere else. u u D u u u D u is one measure of up and down bows. Here I play saw stroke, Nashville Shuffle, and Georgia Shuffle - first on a scale (a good way to practice!) and then on a simple version of Sally Goodin. This pattern and others are explained in my book Oldtime Fiddling Across America. Enjoy!

Written by Pete Anick and Dave Reiner, this was recorded by Dave, Andy Reiner, and Eric Eid-Reiner on Eric's first CD, "Grand Tour: Traditional Music on Piano." We wrote this on electric mandolin with the reverb turned up, so little ghost notes bounced around the room, leading to the name "Ghost." The twin fiddle parts are transcribed in my book, Anthology of Fiddle Styles.

This is from the Fiddle Hell Massachusetts concert on Nov. 7, 2015. I was backed up by my two sons: Eric Eid-Reiner on piano and Andy Eid Reiner on the other fiddle. I kicked off the concert with Bowing the Strings (with Eric only). Then we were joined by Andy for a medley of Old French and Fisher's Hornpipe, followed by Ghost (written by Pete Anick and Dave Reiner). The rest of the concert was of very high caliber, featuring Frank Ferrel (Down East), Laurel Martin (Irish), Pete Sutherland (Oldtime), Andrea Beaton (Cape Breton), Eric Favreau (French Canadian), Andy Reiner (World), Lissa Scheckenburger (Scottish), and Christian Howes (Jazz and Blues). After a quick playthrough of Andy Reiner's Cellosaurus Stomp, we moved 550 chairs out of the way and had a wonderful contradance with David Kaynor calling, the Fiddle Hell Band (50-strong) playing, and hundreds dancing.

I opened the Nov 8th concert at Fiddle Hell Massachusetts 2014, followed by Tom Morley, Matt Glaser, David Kaynor, Ed Pearlman, Alan Kaufman, Andy Reiner, Lissa Schneckenburger, Mark Simos, Eric Favreau, and Darol Anger. We each had about an 11-minute slot, and the concert was followed by a great contra dance. I can't post the whole concert (which was epic!), but I can post my short set. I played Perrodin Two-Step (in my Oldtime Fiddling Across America book) and Cajun Fiddle, In a Continental Mood (a French Canadian waltz by Andy Cutting, just once through), and a medley of Big Sandy River with Devil's Dream. My son Eric Eid-Reiner was on piano. I hope you enjoy these! The next Fiddle Hell Massachusetts will be Nov. 6-8, 2015, in Westford, MA.

Cross-tuned GDGD, learned from the playing of the Balfa Brothers. A rough English translation of the title is The Drunkard's Sorrow Waltz. The wildly modal noting contributes to the lonesome sound of this Cajun tune. On guitar is my friend Pete Anick.

Learned from the playing of the Highwoods String Band. This is part of the tradition of "execution farewell" tunes, traceable back to 1912 or before. My friend Alex Demas is on banjo, and Pete Anick on guitar. Alex runs the Banjo and Fiddle Contest every year in September in Lowell, Massachusetts.

I wrote this multi-part tune for for the book Anthology of Jazz Violin Styles 30 years ago, to explore some of the possibilities of "dawg" style, including fiddle - mandolin harmonies. Glenn Asch was my co-author, and our book is still available as an "archive" edition at Amazon. I'm playing both fiddle and mando on the recording, with my friend Pete Anick on guitar. Cross-tuned DDAD, learned from the playing of Texas fiddler Benny Thomasson. My friend Pete Anick is backing me up on guitar. Pete's a columnist for Fiddler magazine, BTW. The gentle bobbing of the melody and the long, haunting strokes conjure up the peaceful image of darkness descending over the water.
