Bill often played this tune. I backed-it on a tenor banjo tuned AEAE, capoed high-up and flatpicked. Sorry about the fidelity--this is dubbed from the audio of a VHS tape...it's in mono....made using the video camera's built-in microphone.

A melody and chord sequence I endlessly tinker with. It has lyrics too, but here it's played as a fiddle tune.

The A part is like Mississippi Sawyer. The B part, I dunno. I think fiddle tunes sound the way landscapes look. They're all the same and they're all completely different. The ground is the One chord, the sky is the Four chord, the horizon is the Five chord.

I've begun to play in regular tuning more often. It's fun. New things to learn and explore. This is my lefty fiddle built from the parts of three old junker fiddles. With guitar & acoustic bass guitar back-up. Rocktown is the name of an old hamlet near here. There's a road that connects it to Lambertville: 'Rocktown Rd.' DUH.

Bill on fiddle. John Gin on high-drone 2nd fiddle. On the basic track I played mandola. Recorded via stereo mic to mini-disc. Later I added rhythm guitar and 'sun records jaw-harp twang' electric bass. Fade-out to save upload time. I'll post the core track later on, no overdubs. This was the last track I ever recorded of Bill's playing. Had he lived, chances are we might've tried to find some players to have an expanded-combo sound something like like this.

Learned this from The Holy Modal Rounders' recording. Peter Stampfel translated a southern gospel shout into a fiddling song. This style of music is the latest trend, some say.

Q. Where O where can one get a fretless 4-string mandolin? A: Strum your fiddle and find out. Strummed fiddle, bowed fiddle & flatpicked guitar. Large craft somewhere above here, haven't come down yet. Here's one thing that gladdens my mind: it's those old water bearers coming right on time.

A friend listened to tapes of Bill & I while at her job in a restaurant kitchen . The restaurant's owner loved the tapes, so we got a gig without even looking for one. The restaurant didn't take reservations and had picnic tables outside, under an awning, where people could wait till a table became available--or they could choose to eat their dinners outside. So we entertained them while they waited or dined. Sometimes they'd have their dogs with them. Sometimes the dogs would join the combo. The fidelity ain't much--probably recorded on a cassette walkman. But Bill's groove comes through. BARK BARK BARK.

This is a year or two old. Squonky fiddle but I like it anyhow because it's so silly and merry. Little fable critters dancing around birthday cupcakes. Uses the longtime-traditional line-up of fiddle.....flatpicked nylon-string geetar.....and melodica.

"Honey babe I'm bound to ride, doncha wanna go?" Learned primarily from Ralph Stanley and Freighthopper recordings. Played as a fiddle tune--no singing. Balsa-topped fiddle & tenor banjo duet.
