Last weekend two friends, Miche and Bruce, and I left our families, homes, and chores and drove off to a cabin in the mountains to play music. We had a GREAT time!
We’ve been playing together for over a year, meeting on Thursday nights for a couple of hours. Mostly it’s two guitars and me on the fiddle, but we sometimes pick up the banjo, harmonica, or mandolin. We know a couple dozen tunes, but the goal of this weekend was to get “off book” so we can play them without depending on chord charts and lyrics.
By the time we arrived and opened camp, it was past 9p. We worked on a couple tunes 'til after midnight. Woke up around 7, cooked up some buckwheat pancakes, then cleaned up, tuned up and played until 2:30p. After a quick lunch and a walk, we picked up the instruments again around and played until after midnight, not stopping except for a quick dinner break. We got a few more hours in on Sunday morning, then returned to our homes and families. We gathered again to play our first “public” performance at a small Halloween party.
Even though I’ve been a member of FHO for a while, I’ve been disinclined to post an audio of my playing. I’ll remedy this by putting up one of the pieces we recorded from this weekend – Baby Why You Been Gone So Long. Just a short fiddle break in it, but it’s a start.
