If you really wanna get something going, try what worked for me. Post on Craigslist first, just asking if anyone's interested. If you get any response (I did!) make sure you save everyone's email and go hunt up a venue and schedule a time. Then let them know. Now you go to work. Post it on the calendar here on FHO, and also on the calendars of the Banjo Hangout, the Mando Hangout, the Flatpicker's Hangout and whatever other music forums you can find. Post it on Folkjam.org. Let your facebook friends know. Let your google+ friends know. Get it on all your local community calendars, and don't forget to find out if your local radio station or TV station has a community calendar, whether on their show or on their website. Send out press releases. And pass out flyers at the local music shops and any other local jams. I think I sent a few up to the college music department too.

It worked. The Easton Oldtime Varmint Jam is celebrating its third anniversary this April.
