Got a Shoulder Rest

Posted by martynspeck on Wednesday, February 15, 2012

Got the Kun shoulder rest. For the first time my fiddle stays where it's supposed to be. I also found a good youtube video from Red Desert Violin that explains how to adjust it properly.

I had hurt my finger because of my iron grip trying to hold onto neck to keep the fiddle from falling. I'm relearning somewhat but in my experiments last night, sliding up and down the fingerboard was without trouble and it's much easier to bring the hand around to reach the fourth finger up high on the G string.

Also, I'll have to record it to be sure but I think the tone of the instrument is better now that I'm not stifling some of the vibrations of the back on my shirt. The shoulder rest touches in four distinct spots on the edges of the instrument and seems to vibrate more freely now.

I usually don't play with one, I play better without a bulky piece of metal on my fiddle, plus it frees the sound up. However the best place to put it is smack dab in between the ribs and tail. usually on the bottom of the rest there are notches which you may simply unscrew.

Yeah, the Kuhn is quite adjustable. Interestingly, I find the rest frees the sound up over not having it. Might be because I was holding it tight with my chin to keep it from falling and had more of my shoulder touching the back which may have kept the back from vibrating freely.

The Kun is a nice rest. I had one till I gave it to my partner.
She has been going back and forth between 4 different rests, and I even had her play w/o one for two weeks.
She finally settled on a Bon Musica, but it took us about two hours to get it adusted to fit her right.
I do not use a shoulder rest, and it is great!
