A Humbling Experience

Tuesday, September 15, 2009

Dear Friends at Fiddle Hangout,

This past Friday Sept 11th, 2009 I was commissioned by the Gov. of Ky Steve Beshear to be a Ky Colonel. I was nominated by my best friend in my home town of Hindman, Ky  James Phelps Jr. and the Mayor of Kendallville, Indiana Suzanne Handshoe.  This is an Honor that carries with it a very important duty thats both humbling and exciting. My commission is to be a "Ambassidor of Good Will" for the State of Ky to anywhere in the world. The presentation will be Oct 6th 7pm at the City Council meeting in Kendallville.  Friends, Thank You for keeping the music of Ky alive on Fiddle Hangout. It's folks like you that deserve an award for keeping history alive. Please pray that I can walk the walk and talk the talk. Keep on Fiddlin'.!

I was born in the mountains of Eastern Ky in a little town called Hindman just 25 miles East of Hazard. I was raised around bluegrass music mostly The Stanley Brothers. Started playing the fiddle in 1976 at the age of 15 and was taught by my cousin Ray Slone. I learned a few tunes from a neighbor Marion Sumner but got most of my experience by going to Festivals and jamming. Was in a great local Bluegrass group called The Ky Sagegrass for several years and that was some wonderful experiences. Spent 5 years in the Army and did a tour of Germany for 3 years where I played with a German Folk group called Greenfield. Went back to my home town in Ky after the Army but Lack of jobs moved me Northeast to Indiana. Found out later in life that Art Stamper was my 3rd cousin and learned a few things under him up until his death in 2005. I am now just fiddling for my own enjoyment and looking for a band.
