If you've been looking for a yellow fiddle with great sound for not too much money, this might be the one for you. In terms of performance for the dollar, it would be hard to beat.
SATISFACTION GUARANTEED
I bought this fiddle, along with another one, over 20 years ago from a fellow named Bill Blackburn, a fine fiddler who used to play on the Louisiana Hayride back in Elvis's day. I don't know where it came from. He'd put an Earsel Atchley label in it, but I knew it wasn't Atchley's work since I knew Atchley pretty well. I don't think it's Chinese, either. Just doesn't have that look. It wasn't very old when I bought it, but it's been hanging in my closet for years.
I took it apart, cleaned up the graduations, made a new bass bar, set it up right, and it really came out well, despite the fact that it was one of the first ones I had done. It's got two repaired cracks, thanks to one hard winter with no humidifier, both soundly repaired. Setup is my standard fiddle setup: Helicore strings, composite tailpiece with built-in fine tuners, ebony pegs, fingerboard, and chinrest. Notice the fluted F-hole wings, a sign of extra care in the making.
The sound came out great! It was the favorite one of the recording session when we did sound samples. It's plenty poweful, with lots of growl on the low end, and a focused treble. Should be a great jam fiddle, but it's got good dynamic range too, so you can play it softly as well. Response is really good, too; notes start instantly as soon as the bow starts to move.
Give it a listen; see what I'm talking about:
It's best to listen to this with good headphones turned up to real-world volumes. Most computer speakers are notoriously inaccurate.
The recording is a 320 bit mp3, recorded in a practice room on a Zoom H4 by an expert fiddler, with no EQ or any other effects. The room is very flattering, and the fiddler is a very good professional. Unless you are a top player, this fiddle will NOT sound like this for you, but it CAN, if you have the skills.
