This fiddle was made by Herman Fischer in St. Joseph Mo., in 1964. The typewritten label was destroyed when this instrument was regraduated. St. Joseph is 50 miles from Kansas city. We heard that the maker was a lawyer, but couldn't confirm it.
When we recorded the last batch of instruments, our pro fiddler said this fiddle was absolutely his favorite. It sounds great. Loud, resonant and woody might be good words to describe this fiddle. Deep bass, sweet treble.
The fiddle is in excellent condition, no cracks or any sign of repair. The top is one-piece cedar, and the back has a beautiful quilted figure. This instrument is way better than most American fiddles I have seen, and is well worth the price, IMHO. It's unique, in great condition, and sounds excellent.
Give it a listen; you can hear a high quality mp3 here:
It's best to listen to this with good headphones turned up to real-world volumes. Most computer speakers are notoriously inaccurate.
The recording is a 320 bit mp3, recorded in a practice room on a Zoom H4 by an expert fiddler, with no EQ or any other effects. The room is very flattering, and the fiddler is a very good professional. Unless you are a top professional, this fiddle will NOT sound like this for you, but it CAN, if you have the skills.
