Gaspard Duiffopruggar style violin made in Germany possibly Czechosvakia circa 1900. Very good conditiion with one profesionally repaired crack in the top plate, lower right bout. No soundpost cracks or additional repairs. Nice high arching.
Labeled Petrus Sanctus Maggini, faciebat Bresciae Anno 1620, which is a fake label. The back features an inlaid (marquetry) town scene said to be Bologna, Italy. Incised into ribs in large block letters, painted black: upper bass rib: VIVA FVI; lower bass rib: IVI SYLVIS DEO; lower treble rib: VI MORT VA; upper treble rib: DUL CE ?. Rib inscription an abridgement of the Latin verse, "Viva fui in Sylvis; sum dura occisa securi; Dum vixi, tacui, mortua dulce cano," which translates "I was living in the forest; the cruel ax did slay me. Living, I was mute, Dead, I sweetly sing."
Will be shipped in a suitable hard case for protection. The white specks on the top are lint from a cleaning cloth. Interested parties are welcome to personally view and play this instrument in Southwest Missouri
