This is very nice playing fiddle with lots of homegrown charm. It is very affordably-priced for someone who wants to play something individually handmade instead of a factory-made violin.

I purchased this violin from an estate of a guitar collector because I thought it was worthy of restoration. I could tell it was not a mass produced instrument, and the wood was beautiful. It had been sitting for years (maybe decades) in a storage room with a bunch of guitars.

It has no label, but the general agreement among the expert luthiers and dealers I have shown it to is that it is an American-made violin.

The two-piece top is made from spruce with narrow grain in the center that widens slightly towards the flanks. The top is attractively carved, and the f-holes are nicely fluted.

The two-piece back is made with highly-figured maple with strong flame that ascends from the center towards the flanks. The ribs and neck are made from similar maple.

The scroll is bold and nicely carved in the maker’s personal style. The pegbox is in excellent condition, and the pegs turn easily and hold well.

The beautiful deep amber varnish is all original, highly transparent, and was carefully applied over a golden ground. It is not an artificially antiqued fiddle, and the little varnish wear is natural.

The interior is well-carved, and fully-blocked in all 4 corners.

The fingerboard is fine ebony, and the tailpiece is a new Wittner Ultra Composite for easy fine-tuning. The violin is fitted with a fresh new set of Helicore medium strings.

The violin sings with a beautiful bright and focused tone. It has a resonant clear voice on the lower strings, and a strong soprano voice on the higher strings. It has excellent bow response, and plenty of volume for jamming.

Send me a message if you'd like a personal sound sample.

The violin has been fully and professionally restored. During storage, the bottom block had pulled loose and cracked the rib on the bass side. The luthier who repaired it removed the top, re-glued the rib and reset the bottom block. Several minor cracks in the top were also repaired (nothing near the sound-post). The fiddle was then fitted with a new bridge, and set-up to proper playing specifications.

At only $799, this is a great chance to own a charming, professionally set-up, and individually handmade American fiddle.
