If you’ve been looking for a beautiful and great-sounding 5-string fiddle, check-out this Jay Haide L’Ancienne 5-string fiddle from Ifshin Violins in California.
This violin is in like-new condition, and sounds great. Unlike many 5-string fiddles that were made from converted 4-string violins, this violin was built as a 5-string from the start, so it sounds great across all 5 strings and has a properly-sized neck and fingerboard for 5-strings. In particular, the resonant tone of the C-string is neither thin nor weak nor booming, but matches well with the rich tone of the other 4 strings. The violin has plenty of volume.
According to the Jay Haide website:
“The à l'ancienne violins have become the flagship of the Jay Haide fleet. They are envied and copied by other makers, but as much as they have tried, none have come close to equaling them. Some have gone so far as to put facsimile labels of well known French and Italian makers in our instruments and selling them at much inflated prices. One of our ancienne violins even was given a certificate of authenticity from a well-known expert as an early 20th. century Italian violin with an insurance appraisal for $26,000.00! Because of this, every one of the à l'ancienne violin, viola, cello and bass now has a series of brands inside and out to deter the copyists.”

The craftsmanship is superb. This violin was built on an Italian Guarneri Del Gesu model, and the arching, edges, and corners are precisely made. The length of the back is 356mm. The workmanship is clean and precise both inside and out. The scroll and peg-box are finely-carved and the purfling is expertly inlaid.
The tone woods are truly spectacular. The two-piece top is made from spruce with a uniformly fine grain across the top, and the back, neck, and ribs are made from maple with beautiful figure and flame.
The gorgeous red varnish is highly transparent, and was carefully and artistically shaded over a golden ground. This classic old-Italian style varnish has been described as “like gold dipped in blood.” The violin is tastefully antiqued in the classic Cremona style.
This violin is in like-new condition.
