This viola is a beautiful example of German work from an era that pre-dates the more commercial, industrial output of the later 19th century. It was made approximately in the 1820s and has the look and feel of a fine old instrument.
It was played professionally by its previous owner for 40 years in several orchestras and has a wonderfully rich and deep tone, the kind of sound violists spend lifetimes trying to find. It has been played recently by a player in one of the country’s top orchestras and compared favorably to every viola in its price range at another violin shop.
Years before its last owner purchased it, the viola suffered some major damage. It was cracked at the soundpost on the back and the top, in several other places in the top, and the neck broke out, taking the button. Because it was a very fine instrument, it was given an extensive repair, including patches and reinforcements of all damaged areas. That damage left some scars that are still visible today. However, the viola has been completely solid for the entire time the previous owner has had it and has never needed any further repairs, even after extensive daily use.
Were it not for the damage, this instrument would be priced above $10,000, but the damage must be reflected in its current price, even if it is solid. It has been appraised at $2500 by The Violin House of Weaver, and the prospective buyer can have a new appraisal made out in their name for this amount upon purchase.
It has a good quality old case that can be included and there are two good bows available that were used with it. It was given a new professional setup by Maxham Violins to prepare it for sale and maximize its playability and tonal character.
This is a player’s instrument—not one that will appreciate dramatically like an Italian, but one that has the sound any player would be glad to have. The only reason for selling it was that its owner retired from playing after suffering a shoulder injury and could no longer manage holding it.
