Martin Beck instruments are imported “in the white” by the House of Weaver from Romania. The craftsmen at the House of Weaver perform final exterior woodwork and excellent varnishing. This particular instrument is crisp and professional appearing. too flashy. The wood looks great, the varnish has a deep rich appearance, and the arching is quite flat, with narrow channels, giving good power. This is a strong violin. These have made many fiddlers and advancing players extremely happy.
THE VIOLIN HOUSE OF WEAVER
The Violin House of Weaver in Bethesda has been making fine instruments available to musicians since 1898. William Weaver and his family run the business, which is simply amazing! Bill mastered the art of making trade violins sound and look great. He developed the Rudoulph Doetsch line now handled by Eastman and has his own wonderful lines as well as importing fine modern and antique instruments. Most of the modern trade instruments he imports go through his graduation and rebarring process. They're extremely consistent and about the best value going. Gianna’s has sold many of these for almost two decades, with no issues whatsoever.
Imported violins come to the House of Weaver unvarnished and unset, avoiding the necessity of using overly tough varnish capable of handling overseas shipment. The Weaver workshop checks these over carefully, does any woodwork necessary to refine the sound and playing capabilities, up to and including graduation and barring for some models, and ships to us unset except for pegs and end pin.
Our luthier, Stephen Perry, finishes fitting and polishing the pegs, refines the neck and fingerboard shape for playability, fits a new, typically hand-split soundpost), and cuts a good French bridge. He then makes the usual adjustments to post and bridge to assure easy play and well-balanced sound. This is exactly what most good shops do to all instruments coming through.
We go beyond this typical professional setup. Our acoustic adjustment on violins and an analogous process on mandolins, “mandovoodoo,” involves more subtle manipulations to influence how the instrument plays, feels, and sounds. This advanced adjustment provides greater clarity, balance, and projection, providing the performer with increased ease in manipulating dynamics and tone, and thereby reach out to the listener. Well-adjusted instruments are also easier and more fun to play
Gianna Violins has been in operation in one form or another since 1993, initially providing rebuilt vintage instruments to the trade. Later, a regraduated and varnished line was provided to the trade, and later to retail as our “Appalachian” and other models. The Appalachian and Cumberland models are still available. Stephen Perry produces a very limited number of benchmade violins and fiddles. Initially based in Friendsville, Tennessee, the shop has moved to Lenoir City, Tennessee, Chicago, and now to the DC Metro area. We also undertake a range of repairs and setup, upon request.
