This is a rare opportunity for you to own a top-quality vintage German fiddle that really stands-out with its beautiful tone and spectacular red oil varnish!

This violin sings with a beautiful full and focused tone that is neither bright nor excessively dark. It has a strong resonant voice on the lower strings, and a rich colorful voice on the higher strings. There are no weaknesses in any of the strings, and the sound is clean and full all the way up the neck. It has excellent bow response, plenty of volume, and does not lose timbre when played softly. It can cut well in a loud jam.

Lyon & Healy was one of the great importers of fine violins during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They were well-known for the quality of the violins that had the famous "Harp Stamp" below the button on the back. Lyon & Healy is still in business today, although they stopped importing violins around 1926.

This violin was at the top-of-the-line for Lyon & Healy, and was the highest-priced violin in their 1916-1917 Trade Bulletin (see attached picture). It originally sold for $75, a very expensive price for a violin at the time.

This violin is right up there in quality with the finest Ernst Heinrich Roth and Heinrich Th. Heberlein Jr. violins of the same period. Violin dealers currently offer Lyon & Healy violins of this quality today at $5,000 to $10,000. This violin bears the famous "Lyon & Healy, Chicago" Harp stamp below the button in the back.

The tone woods are outstanding. The two-piece top is made from spruce with a very narrow grain, and the back, neck, and ribs are made from maple with beautiful figure and flame. The two-piece back is highly-flamed and simply gorgeous! The deep red varnish is highly transparent, and was carefully and artistically applied over a golden ground. It is not an artificially "antiqued" violin, and there is very little wear to the varnish other than a few minor nicks and scratches. The top seam opened slightly under the tailpiece, and was closed, glued, and cleated such that the repair is barely visible. (see pictures).

This violin was recently inspected and updated by a highly-skilled professional luthier, including fitting a new sound post, bridge, pegs, and tailpiece. The bridge, nut, fingerboard, and tailpiece are all set-up to proper proper playing specifications.

The fingerboard, pegs, and tailpiece are high-quality dense black ebony. The pegbox has no cracks or repairs, and the pegs turn easily and hold well.

This violin is in excellent condition, and ready to play!

This violin was built on an Italian Stradivarius model, and the arching, edges, and corners are precisely carved. The workmanship is clean and precise both inside and out. There are blocks in all 4 corners. The scroll and peg-box are finely-carved and the purfling is expertly inlaid. The f-holes are crisp, symmetrical, and cleanly cut, with delicate fluting, another sign of a fine violin. There is very little wear on the corners or inside the treble C-bout. The length of the back is a 363mm.

This violin will provide a lifetime of playing enjoyment. It is truly a professional-quality violin.

The violin well be very well-secured, insured, and shipped in a hard-shell case of no commercial value.
