Even though the label says it was made by Doctor Carolus Kraus in Austria, 1914, this looks like it was made in the 1930's or 40's. It shows signs of being handmade by an amateur (American?) with some customized inlaid purfling on the back. The maker used good wood and a good arching plan, resulting in a nice looking and playing violin. There are no cracks or repairs.
I recently set this up with a new sound post, bridge, Wittner tailpiece, and new Warchal Karneol strings. This violin speaks easily (very responsive) with an even, resonant tone. It has plenty of power, so you won't get lost in a jam. This violin seems to play all fiddle styles well and would also work for classical music.
