My musical pal Alan recently transcribed a version of Yellow Barber for our website (I have Ed Haley's version there already). I liked it right away and looked up the fiddler, Roger Cooper, a Kentucky fiddler I wasn't familiar with who was associated with better known fiddler Buddy Thomas. I found an article in Fiddler Magazine which led me to a site with many old time recordings available for download for a couple bucks per album (pounds actually, it's a British site). The Roger Cooper album I got there is great! I'm bound to learn some tunes from it.

Roger Cooper is a great fiddler, and a wealth of information about the players he learned from, including the late Buddy Thomas ("Kitty Puss" is another great album). Buddy Miller is a musician and producer in Nashville. Peggy and I discussed Roger in a recent thread. There's quite a bit of him on YouTube too.
I'm not so sure about that site. Are those bootlegs? For example, the Roger Cooper recording was on Rounder, and although its apparently out of print, its available as downloads on Amazon: amazon.com/Essence-Old-Kentuck...07XS86DGL

My bad. Buddy Thomas I meant. Buddy Miller I'm familiar with too and I slipped. The site doesn't present them as bootlegs. Many of the inexpensive downloads are available there as CDs for a regular price. I have to admit the download prices are very good for the few people who will make use of them. The Roger Cooper album included booklet too.
If you think something's not right here let me know. I don't intend to advertise against the financial interest of players. Thanks for your input, Doug. Always appreciated.

Roger Cooper is the next link the line with Buddy Thomas. Like John Harrod, Roger knew many of the great old times in Kentucky and he is a fine fiddler. I have been fortunate enough to know Roger for years and play tunes with him on occasion. He can also play bluegrass and swing fiddle. Jams with Paul Smith were always fun for the their twin fiddle work. Yeah Buddy those were some times.

Slippery Hill's website is good for downloading tunes. And Mossy Roof Stringband's website has a lot of good tunes for learning plus more links for resources. Another good resource is the command-line tool youtube-dl. If you can figure out how to install it you can download youtube videos as audio mp3 files.
