What's your favorite modern case? Pros, cons. Room for shoulder rest, bows. Suspension restraint for fiddle? Quality hardware? I'm a-lookin, but budget is $200 or less. Not a hard-gigging dude here.

In that price range, the GEWA Bio-S is pretty hard to beat. We’ve sold a lot of them in the shop lately. They’re lightweight and designed well—you have to admire German engineering. They’re not as indestructible as harder cases with fiberglass or plywood shells, but you’ll have a hard time finding a decent one under $200.

Bobelock cases have been my go to for the last 25 years or so. Light, sturdy and lots of room. They won't break the bank either.

I have a Bobelock fiberglass case that I like a lot. Well designed and very well made. Its their smallest violin shaped one though, and doesn't have room for a shoulder rest. I think they have some in (or near) your price range.

Is it this case right here, or similar?  I like the smaller shaped cases, but I don't know why they don't make provisions for shoulder rest storage.

No, that's a new model. Mine is like this: swstrings.com/product/cases/violin/B1007FB
Mine has a velvet interior, but I think now they only come in velour. There is no provision for shoulder rest storage because the case is just too small, which is fine with me - I didn't want a suitcase. There is a pocket in the cover, which might work in a pinch, but doesn't offer much protection.
I think the half moon case can hold a shoulder rest, but its quite a bit bigger.

I wouldn't know since I don't use one, but I'm totally happy with that case.

Bobelock cases have been an industry standard for a long time. They’re pretty tough and don’t tend to have much issue. I wouldn’t call them lightweight, but the reason for their heft is their sturdy construction. The lighter cases (like the GEWA one I mentioned) are a little more versatile for carrying for longer distances or in tighter spaces, like taking the Metro.

Rich, what do you think of the GEWA Pure 1.8 shaped polycarbonate cases? Might stretch Scott's budget a bit, but it looks like it would provide better protection with only a bit more weight.

I really like the Pure cases! They've been a big seller in the shop since they arrived. We get the 2.4, which is the oblong version. They're sturdier than the Bio-S but also quite light. There are several companies making cases like that's that are almost identical, but the GEWA seem to be a little nicer than the others. The adjustable neck rest is a useful feature, especially if your fiddle is oversized. The Pure cases are modern and utilitarian, so they don't have the lavish interiors and materials of something like a Jaeger or Gordge, but they're made well and look elegant.

This may not be an issue for the OP, but the accessory bag in the shaped case is not very big. It can hold rosin and a few other small objects, but space is limited to keep the case sleek. Otherwise, a good buy.

I didn't mention this model because the price range was <$200, but if the OP is willing to spend a little extra, it'll be worth the difference.

I'm inclined to go with this one. 

I don't understand the removable pouch feature on a lot of these shaped cases.  A shaving kit or something?  I like the Pure, but wish it had a built-in compartment instead.  Personal preference, I guess.
