Back in 2003 I bought two Silver Creek II fiddles, and I've been playing them daily (almost) since, enjoying the full, woody, non shrill tone I get especially when I play them with my Fiddlerman bows. However, a few years back I purchased a newer, albeit cheap Silver Creek IV (?) and it does NOT have the same tone at all; in fact, I have six small pins on the bridge to mute the sound. But since I use it for practice whilst car camping or vacationing (and can easily live with it being stolen!) , I haven't lost much sleep over its less than euphonic projections, ahem....
Still, I just ordered a $9 chin rest and I'm gonna see if it makes any difference in the tone. The violin is very easy to play, so it'd be nice to have a better tone from it, too.
Anyone else play Silver Creek? The older ones were a steal IMHO.

Have you moved the sound post any? The placement can make a world of difference in tone. R/

Yeah, Richard, I'll try that one after I first replace chin rest. Usually my sound post work is a tough gig for me. I've got the tools but not the mojo for it. I've successfully done it a few times, but my does it take time and patience.

Even with non-euphonious tone, having a fiddle that's easy to play is a big plus when woodshedding. It's easier to focus on developing a tune when you don't have to work so hard operating the fiddle.

Yeah I had no idea what the amount of difference a quality setup would make in the playability of a fiddle until I had one done in Nashville. Wow .... Fiddling haha with a sound post is indeed a pain but often worth the sweat and swearing. R/
