I really love John Salyer's Rose in the Mountain, as he played it. That is, with extra beats before and in the middle of each "B Part" (or the higher part), and none more. 



Though it would seem impossible to make a Salyer tune more crooked than it was as played by Salyer, I scoured the web to find a modern recording in which extra beats were not added the first time through the "A Part" and also in going from the "B Part" back to the "A Part."  I love a crooked tune and on occasion might say, "the crookeder the better."  But, I like Salyer's version of Rose in the Mountain best.  For one, it's just really fun jumping back into the "A Part" with no extra beat preceding it.  If you've played it this way, you'll likely understand.



While I have heard the tune played in jams the same way Salyer played it (beat-wise) -- and the Milliner-Koken transcription renders the crookedness of this tune perfectly -- I was only able to find the following recordings of others playing the tune like Salyer.  They're all good!

I also like  Sayler's version of the tune. It would seem unnecessary to make it more crooked, although I don't know the versions you mention that do that. I have Sayler's version written out on my web page (actually my partner Alan Kendall transcribed this one). It's an easy tune to play. I was jamming with a horn session player once and I showed him this tune and he thought the timing was pretty advanced, or something. Funny.

@abinigia   I would agree with your friend on the "advanced timing" for this and other Salyer tunes.   The extra beats do not seem haphazard in any way in his tunes.  Funny that you played RITM with horns (or a horn).  What was your buddy playing? trumpet, trombone, french horn?

Tenor Sax. That and baritone are his main instruments. When we get together we usually share Irish tunes and he plays the penny whistle and I play fiddle, but he'll sometimes play horn when I transcribe a tune to his key. He likes the challange.

Nice. Many versions old time tunes start on what I consider the B part, at least from how I learned them. There's a unique freedom in the old time world to choose which order you play. Or else I'm easily confused.

It doesn't surprise me that Clare and Walt's transcription is good - they took great care with that book. Also it doesn't have barlines. Did you notice that, and if so did it bother you? I think that strategy was adopted with tunes like this in mind. They are no longer "crooked" in a way - they just flow.

They did indeed.  What a terrific resource!!



As for barlines, I think it was clever of Clare and Walt to leave them out.  I lightly pencil them in where I want them :)
