I am having trouble finding any information on a violin that was given to me from my aunt. It is "Lewis Solo Violin No. 1 B". It says (the "Betts" stradivari) by Franz Weilder in Schilbach. Anno 1912. For William lewis & son, chicago. If anyone can give me some information on this I would appreciate it greatly, thank you.

Thank you for your reply. I have read the information there, it doesn't mention my violin in particular or the man who made it, Franz Weidler. I have done many searches but can't seem to find anything on the lewis solo violin no. 1 B.

Might be listed in my references. Not sure whether they're in the shop or my storage unit. Might post on maestronet - many of those folks likely haven't packed everything!

I would suggest looking through catalogs from that era (Sears) if you can find them online.

I checked the following three books that I have and found nothing:
The Violin Makers of the United States
Known Violin Makers
The Brompton's Book of Violin and Bow Makers
In Brompton's there was a Czech maker born in 1901 named Anton Weidler, but not near Schilbach and too young.
Sometimes genealogical sources can be helpful, but not too many European sites
