I found a really thorough string review on youtube which may help some of you. The reviewer is the owner of Whitehorse Music in Australia, and he tries out a whole bunch of strings on the same violin and you get to hear what they sound like as well as get his impressions. The link is

Yeah nice, But he doesn't talk about the strings that I and a lot of other people use. Like Prim, Jack Pierce my personal favorites just a good steel string and not for everyone. You know there are so many strings out there it would just boggle the mind and my mind is boggled enough. Every string doesn't fit someones else's fiddle...some fiddle's demand a stronger string while others do not..just depends on the fiddle you play. Me I play a fiddle that likes steel strings where others sound better with core strings..So many strings. Jerry

My fiddles don't like steel strings, and, mostly, neither do I. I had a Brunkalla fiddle on loan that sounded great with Helicores!

See, My fiddle or fiddles don't like but nothing steel strings and perhaps we play different I don't know...but steel for me..until I might change my strings. Weird isn't it..about all of us use a great variety of strings...Jerry

I only use steel strings. Prim or something cheaper if I’m on a budget. Steel strings last me years sometimes but I will burn through synthetic strings in a week. Besides synthetic not lasting very long they also feel like I’m playing rubber bands, not very good for the kind of fiddling I do.

What do you tend to use?

I mainly use Thomastik Vision on my stage fiddles with Baggs pickups, but I do have a very good violin with Infeld PI strings. I used to use Dominants but many of the new variants, like Vision, sound even better to me.
