I use dominant strings on my fiddle. I purchase from various sellers on ebay. Lately I have noticed dominants for sale that indicate they are genuine strings "-without the retail packaging". Has anyone ordered this and if so were the strings good.

I haven't seen that advertising, but what it sounds like to me is: "Hey, we figured out a way to make a string a lot like Dominants, and we're going to sell them as if they were Dominants, you just don't have mess with all of that packaging that says Dominants on it." Again I don't know that that is what's happening, but it sounds like it.
I use them on one of my fiddles, and I watch for sales at Shar Music or Southwest Strings. I also order Prims and Helicores from these two companies and have had great service from both. Also at times you can snag a 20% off the whole order and get free shipping, though that doesn't happen very often.

Hope this works and gives one of the links

Could just be bulk strings repackaged into individual strings. I've bought strings at physical stores that are like this.

I have no experience with dominants, but have purchased zyex and helicores this way on ebay, and have always been satisfied with the strings.

The link works. It certainly looks like you're buying Dominants, at that price, I'd go for it!!

Wholesalers buy strings like that in bulk. I'm not sure why a bit of packaging for strings costs $12, guess we are supposed to perceive value based on prettiness. I have been using Evahs. I buy them from a supplier(not ebay) in bulk form and end up saving $12+ per set. They ship to me almost exactly like the pic in your link.
FYI, Thomann is a legitimate seller. Pretty large store. They probably buy enough volume for Thomastik to give them a bulk discount. That's how all big stores undercut the little shops, yes?

Thanks for all the input. The fiddle i play the most came with dominants and I love the sound and response so I don't see any need to switch.
