What is the proper way to show in a transcription that the fiddler plays a certain phrase a random number of times? I've heard more than one recording of Fiddlin' Sid Harkreader playing "Old Joe" (only one of which I can share here), and it's clear to me that he has no set number of times that he plays the phrase used to make up the low section, before throwing in the phrase that closes the B section.
I hope that makes sense.

I haven't thought about that. I usually choose what seems most representative of the fiddler's intent and write that. But I can see why you might want to indicate it's the players choice. How about an asterisk* at the part with an instruction somewhere on the page?

You do what classical people do and you make up a word in Italian (why Italian? Because... Italian) and then you make a symbol for the word you already made and then you put that there. ;)

But on a serious note, what @abinigia said seems most practical.
