Well .... I am of the opinion that different fiddles sound better with different strings. Then there is a players tonal preference. What do you mean by fiddle sound. I am sure you understand what you want..... My recommendation is to try several different makes of string over the next year or so and record your findings to compare. One string the many fiddlers both old time and 'grass use is Prim. They cost around thirty dollars a set. They are a metal core good lasting string. Another metal core string is Helicore by D'Addario many fiddlers prefer these. And the list goes on and on. Take a look at some online suppliers and go from there. Luck and patience... R/

Like Richard said different strings work better on different fiddles. I've always been a devout Prim string player. These strings work better on my fiddle than other strings do. I now use John Pearse Fiddle strings. The strings are close to what Prim strings sound like on my fiddle the only difference I can tell is that they softer to the fell than Prim. They have the about the same loudness...well everything is about the same and they cost less than Prim. But fiddles are as different as you and me and what works for you may not work for me. Good luck. Jerry

There is no 'best' anything when it comes to fiddles. We are spoiled with a boatload of good choices for just about every aspect of fiddling. In the end it all boils down to what you are trying to accomplish and your personal preference.
Perhaps if you told us about your fiddle and goals, we could steer you down the right 'personal preference' path.

Thanks everyone. I am a very mediocre fiddler but wanting to get better. I'm not looking to become a champion contest fiddler but would like to sound good playing at jams with other people. I have a lovely Evan Smith fiddle.

I use Dr.Thomastik dominant strings. They have a warm, bright tone that compliments my style of playing.

For steel strings I like D'Addario Helicore, Prims with Lisa E string, and Pirastro Chromcor. For synthetic I like Thomastik Dominants and D'Addario Zyex. Those are all common fiddle strings except maybe the Zyex.
