I went to Robertsons and Sons violin shop today to look at instruments. I was shown a Christian Pederson violin that seemed quite nice, he makes them there in the shop. Does anyone have information on these? Reviews?

There was also a Salvatore Callegari and one described as " labeled Januaris Gagliano 1770 that I liked. Does anyone know anything about these?

Thank you for any information!

Most of us here won't be familiar with Robertson's. A posh shop with that sort of cachet will almost always overprice their wares. (This shop brokers and sells multimillion dollar instruments regularly) If you're concerned with value or cost vs performance, you should probably look elsewhere. If you just want a nice violin and don't care about the cost or resale value, you're in the right place.

If you are asking about the specific instruments you tried, well, I would recommend you hire a teacher or professional player to accompany you on your next visit.

If you're asking about the makers of said violins, you would have better success asking over at Maestronet. We're mostly poor fiddlers here.

'Labeled Gagliano' means it probably wasn't made by him. Or the shop couldn't determine provenance.

Best of luck in your search!

After further thought, I think most players generally consider playing characteristics and budget to be the most important when buying an instrument. In other words, get the best (to you) instrument you can afford. Any other factors that exist are merely interesting tidbits.

If you're worried about convenience or the aforementioned value, then you really should shop around and have a better player or trusted colleague help you with your selections. An objective helper is always a good thing.

I have a Pederson and I really like it. Bought it around 5 years ago from Robertsons. I got it because it was bright, had good full sound, and projected so much more than the others in the price range. To me, it was so sweet that it was easy to pick it out of the others I tried. I've long since replaced the Evah Pirazzi strings with Prim's and they work just fine. All a matter of opinion of course, and I am not disappointed with it. A colleague of mine is an advanced violinist (plays classical music) who also has a Pederson that she loves.
