I've got several G strings from (Thomastic Superflexible medium) They are Silver and Titanium, and Chrome wound. They have become mixed up and I'm not sure that they are in the original packets.
It's difficult to tell the difference just by looking at them, apart from the fact that they are all 'G', but different diameters.
Am I right in thinking that the regular Chrome G is the thickest in diameter, followed by the Silver and then Titanium?
I prefer a thicker G, like the regular Chrome wound in the medium Superflexible set, but am looking for something that withstands cross tuning (up to an A) and had good definition but is the same diameter as the Chrome.
My fingers are used to feel of a regular Chrome wrapped G.
I find that the regular Chrome G looses definition after it has been retuned regularly

I'll be the first to reply a "who knows?" I can also say that I have yet to have a synthetic string that hasn't easily tuned up and then back down again.  I also can't remember ever breaking one as I twisted the proverbial peg.

The Thomastik catalog shows G strings wound with silver, chrome and tungsten, not titanium. They don't list diameters, but they all have the same tension (more a function of the core material and construction). So they really should be interchangeable as far as retuning and stability. You say your fingers are used to the feel of the chrome wrapped string, so you should be able to pick that one out. I suspect it's actually a chrome steel winding, and if so might be a little more magnetic than the others (although the core might be the biggest factor). You might be able o tell by the color - silver is, well, silvery, and I think tungsten might be more gray, although I'm no metallurgist.

My general comment would be "who cares?" If you already have them, then just use them, and decide which one you like best, then measure it. If they're all the same then buy some more in the orginal packaging.

Lonesome Fiddler - Superflexibles are a rope core steel string, not synthetic - similar to Helucores.

The silver G can have a bit of a yellow cast, at least on some strings. Titanium makes for a gray string that is less shrill than aluminum, most notable on Helicore A strings. Chrome lasts for along time and when applied to a well made string like Pirastro Chromcor it has a dark sound for a solid string, but that is probably more a function of the core which is well made. But it is by living with strings that you learn which string suits you. It's a journey not a destination. I think most of us have tried a variety of strings and have settled on what we play because they are the best fit for us, not the best string, that just does not exist.

Quite right, Doug, thats Tungsten, not Titanium. Anyway I seem to have a silver & tungsten G string, but both feel much thinner than the regular G chrome, when I tried them out briefly. Good sound though. I guess I'll pass them on or keep them for spares.
Expensive to try out different strings!
Thanks everyone.

Helicores, while they do have a  stranded core, it is of some sort of metal not rope. D'adario's attempt to get some warmth from a steel string.

(I'll keep my Helicore hatin' to myself)
