Here was the process this AM when I wanted to start learning this song. As Clyde Davenport likes to say, you have to "catch" it before you can play it.
My old fiddle book said that D is the key. I found couple on YouTube with a nice slow well played version that I could listen to. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2aMJKOD8Lg
I am using GDAE tuning on the Horner Violin. Now, I am just starting and the more I play it the more comfortable I will become. I might not have everything about the melody just right, so don't use this recording for your only source if you are tryng to learn this tune.
I decided to use a Noel Booth fretless 13" antebellum banjo strung with Nylgut strings for the backup.

Sounds pretty good! That's a really cool banjo.

That banjo player is doing an excellent job in every way. Melody is "right on", good tempo, great tone. If a person knows that tune, you recognize it right away when she plays her banjo. Good guitar player as well. He is making her playing sound good. Wish I knew a guitar player like that. Heck, come to think of it, I wish I knew a banjo player like that as well.
