I received a violin in the mid-70's, and would like some information on it, possibly a value.

The label inside reads "Karl Bauer, Germany, No. II, 2017

Any information would be appreciated.

"Karl Bauer" is one of several student models imported by Wm Lewis and Sons violin dealers. The Bauer seems to be made in Germany and sells at the low end of such imported instruments.

Here's a new one for $488 with case and bow:

I was under the assumption from reading some other information that the newer Karl Bauer instruments were partially made in China, possibly I was mistaken.

Have they always been made for Wm. Lewis & Sons?

I think the concept is upside down. It is not that "Karl Bauer" is a particular type of violin, but rather it is a product name used by Lewis and put on low end instruments imported from Germany. Whether or not Chinese manufacture figures in any of this is anyone's guess, but given world economics I would assume so.
