This bow has improved my speed, accuracy and phrasing overnight, and has made playing much easier overall, especially drones and double stops. It weighs approximately 60 grams and is extremely well balanced. I am a beginner so I don't have much to compare, but I read a lot of reviews before my purchase. Here's a couple I found. http://www.jrmusicsupply.com/testimonials.htm http://fiddleheads.ca/shop/testimonials/index.htm (scroll down!)
I did try a Glasser braided Carbon Fiber bow, and liked it just a bit better, but it was much more money. |

This is an attractive bow. Real MOP inlay on the ebony frog, silver winding, and a leather grip. I got the bronze, which is a satin metallic finish that looks like wood from just a short distance away, and it does not give the appearance of a carbon fiber bow, it looks much better than most. Though you can always Go Green for St. Pattys, if you play Irish! There are some fun colors available. |

This is a stellar offering for the price. An excellent step up bow for those beginner to intermediate players who are ready to take it to the next level. Also a good travel bow or second bow for those who have an expensive wood bow they wish to last longer. :)
I do have a comment for left handers. I had read a review that I can't find now that mentions this bow having a camber to it that favors the hair on one side more than the other, and that gives it an exceptionally large "sweet spot". My teacher is left handed and tried this bow, and complained it had a "dead spot" in the place the sweet spot should be. I told him to try playing with it tilted opposite the way he usually holds and try a note. The dead spot went away. So unless they make a left hand model, I would suggest that left handers stay away from this one. And I've not seen mention of a left hand model on any of the sites I shopped. |

Very nice fiddle sonnd. This is a fiddle not a VIOLIN, Bright, squeeky, loud fiddle sound. Not a lot of bottom [ this may be by string choice I havent had a reason to change to other strings] smooth playing. IT SOUNDS LIKE A FIDDLE, even when I play it. I had to get a attached mute so my wife wouldnt go crazy. |

Very nice Intermediate fiddle. I am a novice BUT I actually sound pretty good with this one. I have seen them on the net for about $200 less but the set up and customer service I think compensates for most of that. I will never be able to play it to its fullest but for bluegrass gigs and jams this works quite well. |

If you can keep the tuners working YES. Price for mine [ in VG condition] is about the same as the NET price or e-bay. so its still worth what I paid for it. For a elementary student, its an OK fiddle. By high school they would need a new/better one. I used it to learn on for 2 yrs then got a better one. |

This fiddle has that traditional bluegrass sound: fat and warm in the lower register, with plenty of growl when you need it, and smooth and sweet in the upper register. And it has lots of volume to go along with the tone, but because so much of its projection comes from the bottom end, it plays beautifully (and painlessly) under your ear.
Note: both tracks on my Fiddle Hangout homepage were played on my Kogut fiddle (though I think the mic I used might overstate the high end just a little; it's a pretty dark fiddle).

Bob's a fiddler himself and has been picking bluegrass and winning contests for years, so he really knows what a fiddler (as opposed to a classical violinist) needs in an instrument. The action is low and fast. Closed double stops up and down the neck are really slick. I haven't changed the set-up at all. Best, most fiddler-friendly set-up I've ever played.
The neck on this fiddle is noticeably more stout and the fingerboard thicker than on most fiddles, which seems to make playing in closed positions and up the neck a little easier ergonomically.

Bob's fiddles have a distinctive look to them (Darol Anger has a good, close shot of a recent Kogut fiddle on his website). My fiddle has some ornate carving on the back and a tree of life carving on the back of the peghead.
The purfling is a little rough in spots -- my only complaint about the fiddle. Bob, by his own admission, doesn't build them to be case queens. He builds for the sound. Fair enough, I suppose. |

If you want flawless cosmetics and an instrument that you could also use to play Mozart, you might not be interested in a Kogut. Bob's instruments are really purpose-built -- they have that classic bluegrass tone and they play like a fiddle (not a violin) should. This is the best bluegrass fiddle I've played, ever. Highly recommended. |

I love this fiddle. If it were stolen I would buy another just like it. I also have a Adolph Adler Sr. (Dresden, Germany 1754) fiddle from early to mid 1800's and a Palatino 450. The Knilling is my favorite to play because it plays easier and louder than the Palatino and I don't worry as much about it as I do the German fiddle. It's perfect for jams. |

Fiddle was set up extremely well - Von is a fantastic luthier as well as a dealer. Fiddle only came with an E fine tuner, which has taken a little adjusting to, but the pegs turn fairly easily and generally hold well. The finish is antiqued to look as much like the David Guarneri del Gesu of 1740 (played by Heifitz) as possible. It's a brand new fiddle that's made to look old and generally I have mixed feelings about that, except that in this case the result is gorgeous. It is a very pretty violin with a lot of character. When I purchased it there were a few small scratches from another party who had tried it out and was a little careless. I played close to thirty fiddles in the $1000-$2000 price range, and three $5000+ before buying this one. The Scott Cao blew everything away under $2000 that I found (with the exception of a $1700 Heinrich Gill, the only real competition I found in that price range), and it stood up well against the far more expensive violins I tried. Most of the fiddles under $2000 were either sandpapery, overly bright, muddy, too quiet, or some combination. It is extremely easy to play, it has a lot of depth, power and color to its tone, and I feel like I get more out of it the better I become. Once I start playing it, I don't want to stop. For the xenophobes and Euro-philes, it is made in China using Chinese wood. But it is HANDMADE in China, by one luthier trained by Scott Cao. The "s" in the 750s I believe stands for special varnish - he uses the same varnish on his handmade top of the line violins. The only reason I give the fiddle "9's" on most of the ratings is because I want to leave room in my dreams for upgrading to something greater when I win the lottery (like a real del Gesu). If you are looking for a fiddle in any price range, I strongly suggest you audition a 750s - you will be amazed at the quality for the price. |

I prefer a "sweet" sound, as opposed to a more traditional, bright bluegrass sound. This fiddle suits my tastes perfectly. Of the 6 instruments I tried, this was the mellowest, and the most even sounding from the open G, all the way up the neck. Though I'd like to consider myself a bluegrass player, I feel I'm at my best playing a waltz, and this fiddle just sings so sweetly! After owning it for over two years, I've noticed that it's really opened up, and projects better now than when it was new. |

Even, full tone up and down the fingerboard. I switched to synthetic strings recently and they are a good match for the fiddle. She is mellow, and sweet with a wide range in dynamic ability. The tone doesn't break - it doesn't matter how loud you play. I have a classical/old time fiddle background and also play backup quite a bit for various and sundry occasions. I don't have a pick up - I've thought about it, but can't bear to put the hardware on her. I'm thinking about getting another Horner and putting a pick up on that one. We'll see... |

Fiddle was set up, but Mr. Horner is pretty much finished when the varnish dries. Have had the nut filed, a new bridge, and most recently a new tailpiece as the custom one he made would not allow me to play without fine tuners. I have decided to put the fine tuners back on the custom tailpiece and use it again. I prefer the personality and the ability to fine tune a little more easily in the Tennessee weather. I would prefer to buy a Horner and have it tweaked than play any other kind of fiddle. |

The fiddle sold herself. She is pretty. The stain is dark with some lighter areas on the shoulders and belly area. She has a one piece highly flamed back with a smally inlay in the center/top of the back. It looks like a shield type coat of arms design. The tailpiece also had a flower design inlay and the pegs have dots on the ends. There was a mark in the varnish near the fingerboard where the previous player had held it when not playing. Mr. Horner told me when I got it that Curly Fox owned it before me. |

He made the chinrest, tailpiece, and pegs. The fine tuners were functional. Nothing spectacular, but they worked until I decided to try not using them. The tailpiece wouldn't hold the string without fine tuners, but I really don't care. I prefer the originality of the custum made tailpiece WITH fine tuners. I depend on my violin. I would recommend this fiddle for way more than the price I paid. I have played many violins - especially over the past few years and the cost(not WORTH) and age (mine is 24 this year) of those violins were very much greater than my own. I have never played a violin that I would prefer over the one that I own. Actually, two of my sisters each have a Horner violin. They are the only other instruments (one in particular, but I try to be fair to the other because it was made so recently) that I would consider to have the same WORTH and playability of my violin. I have played this paricular violin since I was about 12 years old. I reccomend his violins to all of my students if they are interested in a serious instrument to have for the rest of their lives if they so choose.

The BV-100 is probably the loudest fiddle in the room at my jam, but maybe a bit "scratchier" than some other fiddles that were made for more of a classical style of play. But for what I play (Old Time and Irish Folk) it's perfect. I personally like the scratchy tone, which people have told me could also be my lack of experience and the bow hair. I've let others play it and they seem to get a sweeter tone than I do. I play with the stock 3/4 bow that it came with (I like the control of the 3/4 over the 4/4), and Old Fiddler line strings (not sure what guage). |

No, it was not set up because I asked the seller to ship it with the bridge down. $40 later at my local shop, she was ready to roll. I'll rate set up at 5 just because it really doesn't apply in my case. I did toss the stock bridge and had my luthier set it up with a new Aubert maple bridge shaped for double-stop playing. He also filed a little under each string at the nut to lower the action, but nothing major. |

The BV-100 is bare bones stock as far as looks. But don't let that turn you off. The grain in the spruce top is really nice and close together, the maple back is 1-piece and is nice though not lined up in the typical diagonal flame pattern. I personally don't care all that much about the back anyways, so this doesn't bother me. There are minor finish flaws in the lacquer(?) where the neck meets the body, but it definitely doesn't affect playability and is not immediately noticeable. Overall I love the satin finish and the staining really gives it that "old time" look. I chose this fiddle as much for its looks as for playability. |

Being new to fiddle I don't know all that much about fiddle hardware. Though when I let a fiddler from my regular jam who is very knowledgeable take a look at it, her second comment, after how nice the finish was, was how good the hardware was. She said she couldn't believe that they put this high quality hardware on such a low-priced instrument. She even suggested that the hardware on it was probably worth more than what I paid for the fiddle. |

The BV-100 comes with a 10 year warranty against manufacturing defects. If they really stand behind their products it should be a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects. Just my opinion. |

I would definitely recommend this fiddle to beginners and intermediates. I love it. I am at a beginner level (2 months) but learning very quickly as I've been playing guitar for 20+ years. Experienced players always seem to want an 1840 German fiddle or something, so I'm sure they wouldn't be interested in this one since it's new. But I have been going off the reviews of it by my peers that I play with. They all seem to think that it's a really good overall quality instrument, they can't believe the price, and they love the shape. They also complain a bit about how loud it can be. LOL. Compared to the other fiddles I have played it's a bit stiff, but these fiddles are a lot older and have been played for 100+ years or so. I imagine in 100 years this thing will be hitting its prime. |

The fiddle was dropped about 20 times by my kids and it has done fine. However, the stock bow was junk and began falling apart immediately. I still can't figure out why three hairs fall off of it per month. It has been a slow decay. The fiddle has always tuned easy and stayed in tune. |

I bought this fiddle without ever playing a fiddle. After a year of lessons and a lot of practice, it doesn't sound so bad. I can't wait to replace it, but I'm so glad I bought it. It's perfect if you want to try it without a big investment, stays in tune, fairly easy to play, but quickly outgrown. |

Acoustic: Not very loud. Tone is "muffled", but actually quite pleasant. Electric: Much better as an electric instrument. Even response on all 5 strings. Running through my computer with a Creative Labs X-fi soundcard (*** need a preamp to do this***). Clean sound... nice acoustic electric for fiddler on a budget |

Violin Came from the factory well set. I took it to a local luthier who gave the soundpost a quick tap or two. Action was good... bridge sits on top of the transducer plate, which is mounted into the violin. No need to trim or shape the feet of the bridge. Pegs fitted well, cheap strings. |

Construction is plywood top/back/sides.
Use of a tiger-maple laminate on back and sides with a nice figure to it.
Finish was a nice reddish-brown satin. Pleasing to the eye.
Construction was very clean. Lined and blocked (surprisingly)
Purfling was painted on, although the website claimed it was inlayed. For $50, who's complaining? |

A recommendable fiddle for the price. At $50, I wasn't expecting much, so what I got was better than expected. Out of the box it was in playable condition. Tone isn't spectactular, but it ain't awful either. Fiddle really shines when you plug it in. I found the tone was even better if you used one of the sliding mutes when playing it electrically. Mellowed out the tone a bit.
Although the construction of the body is all plywood, the veneer and finish are very attractive. Internally, everything is blocked and lined and very clean. No evidence of loose seams, blocks, or lining.
The fifth string is a nice bonus, but you can tell it was an afterthought (the nut and bridge weren't cut for 5 strings). The string spacing tends to be a little tight... since the bridge and fingerboard are standard dimensions.
A nice instrument for the beginning violinist... or if you just need a cheap, durable violin to carry around. As an electric violin, it might be useable for a gig.... but the acoustic sound is kind of weak.

Good full sound - not super loud -good volume and alive very playable! well, it makes fiddle sounds - it rings, and there is a beautiful eveness all up and down the range. Very nice, very playable for a student fiddle. Even if I am not really a student - but needed an affordable fiddle out yonder! I will give it and 8 - because there are more expesive fiddles out there - but it is fine for most anything! I haven't amped it, or done wired sounds/effects. It's acoustic fiddle playing alone and in jams - no problem being heard -
I like it - it's solid, the bow that came in the 'kit' is one of my better ones. (carbon fiber, horsehair) feels like wood - (case, rosin, bow) |

I had it reset up when I moved to desert/ mtn (reno, NV) area - climate/humidity difference (@- 50.00 - here) pegs were slipping a little - bridge fix (Az desert not real kind to wood instruments) (I played a lot! -But this thing ROCKS! amazing to play, no trouble. no warping or cracks yet - |

Sound is a definite upgrade from the $45 chinese special I started with. Fiddle is louder and also has a much warmer tone. Have heard the tone of Morgan Monroe fiddles described as "brittle" which I would agree with. This is not a fiddle that "violinists" (even students) or hardcore bluegrass types would find pleasing to the ear. Myself, I tend to play old time fiddle tunes and folk music so I like it just fine. Rating is based on music I like to play. |

Fiddle was NOT set up when it arrived. The sound post was standing (thank goodness) but it was shipped with the bridge floating in the case and the half installed strings and crappy fine tuners flailing about. I restrung the fiddle, set the bridge, doped and set the pegs, installed one fine tuner on the E (included). This was a back stock or factory second fiddle that had been sitting around somewhere and also needed some cleaning of dust etc. The bridge was fitted to the belly pretty well and is cut for fiddling (somewhat flat with a very low dip to the high E). If set up is a major concern or if you were buying an expensive intrument I would not recomend this seller. |

Appearance is interesting. The shape is a Chanot style body with NO corners just smooth curves all around. Chanot was considered an amateure fiddle maker and developed this style in the early 19th c. in an attempt to make an "original" fiddle design. He claimed the shape was accousticly superior although old books on european fiddle makers say this "muffleled" the tone. Looks neat to me and I like that its unusual. Has a light satin finish which gives it a nice old time look to my eye. This is the lowest end of the Bean Blossom line so the tone woods are sturdy but with little or no flaming etc. The grain of the spruce and the purfing look pretty nice though. Ebony finger board had a slight split near the nut which i filled when I cleaned and set it up and is now nearly invisible (this was a factory 2nd i believe). Scroll is pretty attractive for factory work. Fittings are boxwood and give the fiddle an overall pleasing look, at least to me. Didnt buy this fiddle for looks, but I was pretty happy with its appearance. |

Fiddle is discontinued from Morgan Monroe, but i do have a warrenty card wich i just sent in which claims a 10yr gurantee against defect etc. Have not had to contact MM. WillsRealDeals ( the ebay seller) were easy to contact and offered a 7 day return policy. Didnt represent all of the little nicks etc on this fiddle in their ad, but did include a nice set of fine tuners and a new set of strings with the basic fiddle package. The price was reasonable (nearly $100 less the any advertised price for this fiddle I saw) so i forgive any little faults. |

Really like the Boxwood pegs, tailpiece, chinrest. Mostly just my own preference. I like the feel of the Neck and action, as well as the finish. These are similar to the pricier MV-400 fiddle still available from Morgan Monroe under that name. The seller also included 4 wittner long arm fine tuners of which i installed only one. Overall, the components are pretty nice. Again, sturdy beginers fare or maybe even a cut above. |

Overall I Dig this Fiddle. It has a nice appearance and a warm old timey sound. The feel of the neck, action, and the finish were similar to the MV-400 still available from Morgan Monroe that I played in some shops. The higher end fiddle was a little louder, a little heavier, maybe a little better response, and about $300 more. They also used to produce a higher end version of the Bean Blossom fiddle that was about the same price as the MV-400 but with the same shape as the bv-100 with fancier flamed tone woods and a few extras for about the same as the MV-400. All the Bean Blossom Fiddles have since been discontinued. Overall I really enjoy the feel and sound of this instrument. I like the unusual shape and the nice fittings etc. I was looking for a step up from the junker I started with at a reasonable price and this fit the bill just perfect. If it were stolen or destroyed I would only hope I could find something as descent for the money. |

I am a bluegrass fiddle player mainly, but do play some country, southern rock, and even some rock with this fiddle. The fiddle has a remarkable tone. It has beautiful bass and treble blending. I do occasionaly run a Fishman V-200 pick up with this instrument and its pretty tough to beat the pure tone of this instrument, you can still get a nice warm tone, if you run through a decent pre-amp or DI box. |

The fiddle was set perfect for me. Since John built the fiddle to suit my playing style, which is pretty heavy on the bass end, it was perfect for me to play. I didnt any growling from the low C, unless I wanted it. I have played the fiddle with D'Addario Helicore's both medium and heavy gauge strings, it was set up with medium, but I tend to lean towards the heavy for a better tone and durability. |
