Hi all - first post on "this" Hangout but a longtime member of the Banjo Hangout! I am a scholar of 1940s/50s music, specialized in Blue Grass music (but I also play hillbilly music and western swing).
Benny Martin is my favorite fiddle player, and the tone and ideas he had are unmatched in my book.

I was just wondering if anyone would know what fiddle he played (in the 1950s) and what gauge string etc...
Thanks a lot!
Matt.

Well Matt ...... I have no clue. But like you I would be interested to know. Ask Fred Carpenter at the Nashville Violin Shop. He may know someone who knows....... R/

Kinda breaks my heart how Big TIge was sort of underappreciated in his later days. He and John Hartford were close.

While I don't know about his fiddle but only from picture, he was a big proponent of electrification. In fact he influenced me enough to add a pickup, and run through an amp. John Hartford heard him say, I'd wear electric shoes if it helped me to be heard.
