Hi Fiddling Friends,

I'll be teaching this material at a free, hands-on workshop at the Joe Val Festival (Framingham, MA) on Sunday, Feb 19, at 11AM.

At the workshop, I'll have a live guitarist/singer, and will be teaching these techniques in the context of common BG songs (Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms, All the Good Times Are Past and Gone, etc.) in different keys.

Even if you won't be there, I thought this handout might be useful.  It shows how I think about some of the techniques that may be used in combination to sound more bluegrassy.

Let me know what you think!

Dave

P.S. Also a workshop teaching Orange Blossom Special at 5PM on Saturday, Feb 18, at 5PM.

P.P.S. There will be 300+ workshops at Fiddle Hell Massachusetts (Nov.  3-5, 2017) - make plans to join us for the weekend.

Sure, as long as you share the PDF as is.  Hope it's helpful!

For all of us who can't make it; Maybe you can do it again by adding a 4th day to Fiddle Hell? 😉

Good thought, although we already have 300 workshops at Fiddle Hell in the 3 days.  Teaching bluegrass fiddle classes at FH in 2017 are: Ellen Carlson, Laura Orshaw, Art Schatz, Pete Anick, and me.  Also some great mandolin teachers, some of whom will also teach bluegrass techniques.

I like the way you think Dave! Especially, Listen.

Listen, Listen, Listen.  And you said it, Listen to Everything. It's all fuel.

We are ultimately playing from our brains. The incubator for all the hatchling ideas.

Hope you had a good FH!

Thanks, wooliver!

FH is always great - we're in planning mode for the 2017 event in November now.

I'm happy that several people are finding this handout useful.  The written points came to life at the Joe Val Festival hands-on workshop when we put these techniques in the context of Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms (in A, Bb, and B), In the Pines (E), Will the Circle Be Unbroken (G), Wabash Cannonball (G), and a few other tunes.

The other workshop I taught at the festival was how to play Orange Blossom Special, complete with bells and whistles... and both rocking and double shuffles.  That was a challenging hour-long workshop.

Incidentally, I also have a densely packed handout called "A Bluegrass Fiddler's Bag of Tricks" that I might get around to posting sometime.
