I got this new fiddle at Clifftop. I asked the vendor for the loudiest, bassiest fiddle he had and I didn't want that hollow sound that most bassy fiddles have. He presented me with this, and after trying a few more, I came back to this one.

It's possibly American made, and a supposed Guarnerius copy. After a bit of research and some insight from my local luthier, I've come to the conclusion this is far from a Guarnerius copy. It has a supremely tall body, and Guarnerius violins usually have a much much flatter body. The back is made from one piece of wood.

The fiddle came with a super thick baroque style bridge. I intend on replacing it.

It's loud as hell and I had a hard time not blowing the audio out while recording on this crappy built in mic. I recorded two songs in high cross tuning and low cross tuning to demonstrate the range of the fiddle. I got big eyed rabbit from a tommy jarrell recording, and david bragger gave me the foundation to Booth and I went back to the Marcus Martin recording and tried to mimic his flair and variations. I think I played it a bit faster than him, though. Enjoy!

Oh, and for some reason, Fiddlehangout turned my pictures 90 degrees while uploading, so turn your heads, folks.

That fiddle is clearly a keeper!  Has a strong presence.

And BTW, excellent versions of the two tunes.

Love the sound of your new fiddle. Those tunes are really rich.. Kind of hard to put it down, I would imagine. : )

Nice sound. One thing... if you get a different bridge for it, it won't sound the same. So keep the thick old bridge, just in case you want to put it back on. smiley

That sounds awesome, I especially love Booth. That tune is so good, you captured it awfully well too.

LOOKS AWESOME!! I'm glad it's not too red, I like a good dark amber brown fiddle.  Sounds great too!  I'm a big fan of fat, highly arched fiddles.  Love the bass that comes out of em!

Good job on those tunes and on acquiring that nice fiddle too. Was it set up for Baroque playing at a lower "standard" A (A415 I think)?  It might sound really cool tuned down a bit (not to say it doesn't already sound nice).

Thanks! I haven't tried tuning that low. But I imagine it would sound great. The lower this thing goes, the better it sounds.

Earlier this year my husband was traveling (which means fiddle at any hour is fair game) and it was really late at night and the Chicago wind was blowing and I dropped my fiddle to FCFC and it was AWESOME! : ) Looking forward to recordings!
