DEar freinds in fiddle community: I would like to know how to carve a violin scroll, anyone out there who knows how to that would give me some pointers or instruction or where I could find insttruction on how to would be much appreciated................................Dennis in Az
i watched a seasoned pro. He glues a photo copy of the scroll to the scroll he is carving. I took that idea and did the whole image in AutoCAD. I now have many iterations of scrolls the most recent taken from the trade secrets in The Strad magazine. Search the Vignoli spiral drawing technique It is kind of fun. I would be happy to share my AutoCAD scrolls. I can't promise the scale will be exactly what you are looking for but i can include dimensions. Note that the scroll is one area where you express youself, there is no correct spiral. I have even done a double spiral... once. Got it out of my system on a Hardanger... so no one questions it.
I placed a template of may latest scrollon my homepage here, I don't know if you can copy paste it into you graphic program or not. If you have AutoCAD or a .dxf compatable drafting program I could email the dxf file to you if you wish. This scroll is base on a recent article in The Strad trade secrets where K.K. shows you how to draw a Cremonese type scrol.
