For some odd reason I developed a squeak playing a simple waltz. I don't normally squeak at all even on the E-string. In fact the E-string was still not even squeaking.

I've been learning to keep my fingers down and I do it sometimes not even thinking about it, which is good.

I was still fingering on D string and had to play an open A and then immediately back to the same fingered note on D so I kept D fingered.

But A would squeak aweful. I thought I was brushing the D string with the bow when playing the A.

Turned out my finger was just brushing up against the A messing it totally up.

So I tucked my elbow in just a wee bit and arched my wrist just  a bit more so that I came down a little better and maybe scooched the fingering of D over just a bit away from A and the squeak is gone.

This has been bugging me for a couple weeks !!!

I thought for sure I was doing something wrong with the bow and never thought to look at my fingering. Ugh.

Yep that's where squeaks come from mostly. Or sometimes too light pressure on a higher string. Try using a upbow where you have a consistent problem, bet it helps.

I am working on the squeak issue too.   I have to place my finger off-center on the string, sometimes one way and sometimes the other, to avoid the adjacent string.......adding one more variable to simultaneously process.    But it's nice to have goals.

PS:  My squeaks start to populate a piece so densely sometimes (and are very short in duration) that I end up playing a completely independent tune in parallel with the primary tune.    Now if I can only perfect that, I will take it on the road.

Everyone's hand (and instrument) are all slightly different.  What you have to do on one instrument,  you may not have to do on another.  Another squeak issue occurs with the fleshy part of the base of your forefinger coming into contact with the open E string.  I t happens to me when i play the B part of O'Sullivans March (key of  G) . Interestingly, it doesn't happen on any other tunes for me when I go to the E string.  After a while these adjustments in your left hand angle usually become second nature (but not all the time).
