I have never thought of MIDI as quality audio but I made a small discovery.  By tuning my fiddle to a standard of 443 Hz, I get almost excellent pitch.  The overall sound quality is still not much better but it makes a much better backup practice source.

Does this make any sense to anyone ?  I wonder if it would be true for eveyone to tune 443 on MIDI or is it just an oddball effect with my hardware ?

It might have something to do with this:

One time I had just recorded "Over the Waterfall". The thought occurred to me to record a second unison fiddle part, but I had the idea to use a different fiddle to make the second fiddle stand apart more. Well, after I recorded it, I was horrified when I realized I hadn't checked the tuning, and the second fiddle was NOT in tune with the first one! But listening to the recording, it not only sounds good, but enhances the sense of two fiddles which is what I was trying to do. So I kept the overdub, and you can hear it in my Music section.

I'm guessing tuning your fiddle sharp does something similar so your fiddle stands apart and doesn't mush together with what the MIDI is playing.

I'll have to try that myself- I sometimes have been known to learn tunes from MIDI- I can remember them better than when I learn them from sheet music!

I would say that the two fiddles in "Waves" complimented each other very well and I liked the sound.
