Hey all - if you're interested, check out this solo transcription I posted on my blog <sokillingman.com>. One might not consider Hot Club Jazz to be fiddle music, but I think if you give it a close look/listen you'll find that Grappelli draws a lot of influence from folk fiddling, and influenced quite a few players in the course of his career and beyond.

Anybody have a favorite solo of Grappelli's? I'd love to have some suggestions for my next transcription!

I am DEFINITELY interested!!! :) I totally consider Hot Club Jazz to be fiddle music! :) I love Grappelli! My favorite solo of his is his solo on Minor Swing, with Django Reinhardt. If you ever transcribe it, PLEASE post it!!! I've been wanting to learn it ever since my teacher started teaching me Minor Swing last week...
You have an awesome site btw. Keep up the good work!!

I looked at the transcriptions, and I gotta say that's why I listen to jazz and play old time.

Great transcription! I love Grappelli's style. Depending on my mood it makes me want to practice a lot or just give up altogether. :-) I get a kick out of a duet he did with Yehudi Menuhin called "Jealousy."

I went ahead and transcribed Grappelli's solo on Minor Swing this afternoon - check it out!

And I've just started listening to 'Lady Be Good' - I must say those are some nasty solos! I'll get started on those sometime this week, but it'll take me a while.

Wonderful. Thanks so much for these, and for your site! I also love Hot Club jazz and jazz fiddling of all kinds. I think I might get to sound like Grappellii if I practice enough.*

haha, for sure. I listen to Grappelli to get inspired, but it's hard to focus on feeling inspired when I'm picking my jaw up off the floor.

I've often thought that old time fiddling and jazz have a lot in common. Many old time musicians just play around with a tune, testing the key and the bowing constantly.. You know what some old timers say, "I never play a tune the same even ONCE'"...LEE

Cory, I'd be interested to hear a little about your transcription process--are you using a slow-downer app to tame these solos? What notation software do you use? The output is nice; it has a sort of hand-written look. |

Check out this article I wrote for my process: <http://www.sokillingman.com/blog/howwhy-should-i-transcribe/>
And for the really fast/nasty licks I use a fantastic program called 'Transcribe!' which can be found here: <http://www.seventhstring.com/xscribe/download.html>
thanks!

corygrossman, thanks for posting this. I do transcriptions myself and know how painstaking this can be. I am working on El Cumbanchero, as played by Randy Howard. I will try your technique and see how it goes.
I did not have an y luck with any transcription SW as different violins are just to complex in sound. ... Or I am doing something wrong.
