French Violin, circa 1920s

I have a nice French fiddle for sale in the classifieds. It has a beautiful, light finish. This instrument is really loud and would be great for a band setting or for use in jams. It aslo has a very strong, clear, bright tone, so it is also versatile.

Fortunately, I have 2 other fantastic violins that have been in my family about 100 years. I got one repaired recently and so the French violin (not a family fiddle) has to be sold to pay for the repairs.

If anyone is interested, take a look at the ad. I hope it goes to a good home to someone who will play it everyday! Let me know if you have any questions, always happy to answer.

I also have two very nice bows for sale at a reasonable price.

For Sale: 1922 Carlo Micelli

I am selling a violin purchased from fellow Fiddle Hangout member superdave some time ago. This is a wonderful violin in great shape -no repairs, plays great and sounds great! This is one of the much higher end Carlo Micelli instruments. There is no bow or case with this but I will have it professionally packed.

I am only selling for one reason. I currently have built a few and simply playing my own -there is just something about playing your own creation.

I am asking $2000.00 US Dollars OBO.

Thanks for looking.

1951 American Violin by Joseph Wallo, pristine

An excellent violin made by American maker Joseph Wallo in 1951. I am the 2nd owner of this violin which is in pristine condition. No cracks, no repairs, set-up and ready to play. Joseph Wallo was based in the Washington DC area and is primarily known for his guitars. Wallo worked for the House of Weaver where in all liklihood he learned violin making, which was more a passion for him than his mainstay of high-end guitars. I did some research on Wallo and see that in the early 1960s he built a neck for Pete Seegar's banjo! Pretty cool. This violin is dated 1951 and is #14. Included is a new Bobelock 1014 Hill Style Case, and a Leon Pique bow which needs to be rehaired. Price is negotiable. Photos to follow soon.

Best way to reach me is by phone, (864) 590-0671.

Here is the ad on fiddlehangout:

I have also listed this violin for sale on banjohanout.org, where I spend more time (I play banjo too) and I have created a thread there which provides some history of this violin maker. Here is a link to that thread:

For Sale: The Tramp [SOLD]

I've decided to sell the Tramp. I put him up for auction on e-bay but as long as they are no bids I will sell him to a hangout member for the starting bid of $400.00 plus shipping.

I want him to have a great home. All of the details are in either the auction link or the classified ad but please feel free to ask more questions.

I will by adding an older cross tuning fiddle as seen in my photos sometime in February and I know in my heart that I won't play this one anymore.

4/4 Violin

made in 1999

this is a Primo labeled violin made by the Jinyin company (not the Palentino maker!)
This violin was hand carved and is light weight
It was made by one of the first Chinese companies working to make the best violins in the world and the quality shows

The varnish is well done with a golden to toffee colored finish
there is NO shiny overglaze on this fiddle, it was finished in the classical style

It is the Masters series violin indicated by model number: 10-140M (noted in label)
I spent a lot of time before purchasing this violin researching makers
these violins were imported by a music teacher that was tired of having poorly made instruments for his upper level students

I purchased this violin new in 1999 for $600.00.

Carpathian spruce fine - medium grained top
Highly flamed one piece maple back, sides, neck and scroll
True ebony fingerboard
fine - tapered scrollbox
well done purfling - not painted!!
beautifully carved scroll

It went unplayed in it's case for 10 years due to a family tragedy.

I love this violin but due to my now owning two very nice vintage fiddles I no longer need it.

Currently strung up with Vision (Thomastik) strings (only one month old)

It will come with a bow stamped St. Clement
I would consider this an intermediate student bow (you can see them for sale her on e-bay)

Will be shipped in hardshell case. Fully lined and in fair shape. A friends cat used it as a scratching post while the violin was being stored in her home while we moved, so there are some pulls in the nylon covering.

This violin has very few MINOR scuffs and scratches which come with age.
There are NO cracks or glue separations

I would suggest the buyer take this violin and have a new bridge cut
I had to put on a temporary bridge when the original split about a month ago when I put the new strings on
It's playable on the current bridge but a new bridge will make it sound even better

I would also suggest having the pegs refit. Ten years with no tuning as left them needing a little sanding to make them perfect.

I don't want to promise too much on the sound seeing as this is a problem with e-bay and paypal
I will say that it sounds great to me
the resonance you feel from this violin is amazing while playing

Thanks for looking.

2009 Dewey Cole (Galax, VA) Sassafras Fiddle

For sale: 2009 Dewey Cole Sassafras fiddle for sale. Dewey lives in Galax VA and is a fine old time musician and instrument maker. His work is well regarded in the area by local players. Dewey made this fiddle and several other from an old piece of sassafras that he had. The back, sides and neck are made from this. The top is made from European spruce. The tuners are old German friction tuners. The holes in the pegbox can still facilitate wooden friction pegs. There are no holes drilled into the peg box. These tuners work very well. The fiddle comes with a Glasser bow. Please email with questions. jeffsbanjer@yahoo.com There are pictures in the classifieds.

AND here is a link to Dewey playing a similar fiddle he made using sassafras:

Xmas Fiddle Tunes Tutorial CD

Hello folks,

Lisa Ornstein here posting from the brisk chill of Portland, OR. I recently put together a workshop on Xmas old-time fiddle tunes. I did so on the premise that there was surely something better to play for the holidays than Jingle Bells or I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus. I ended up teaching four tunes: Isham Monday's Christmas Eve, John Carson's Christmas Time Will Soon Be Over, Tommy Jarrell's Breaking Up Christmas, and French Carpenter's Old Christmas Morning.

I made a CD tutorial to accompany the workshop, with each tune played at dance speed, at moderate speed, and broken down into a detailed tutorial with help on bowings, ornaments, etc., along with tune transcriptions for flyspeck readers. If any of you are interested in acquiring same said, I'd be happy to correspond with you off-list.

Again, many thanks indeed. And all the best to all of you for the season,

Lisa

Daedalus Rig

Hey all, so i'm considering selling off my live touring rig. It consists of:

Daedalus C-81 Cab
Daedalus 4 space rack
Rane ap 13
lexicon mx200
furman power conditioner
halfer p1500 power amp

I wanted to post here on the hangout because i also have a pretty specialized pickup/mic system i've been using. Basically i had an audio technica ATM-350 mic wired into my input jack with a schatten pickup under the bridge and ran these both into the rane, which if you're familiar with the ap 13, they allow blending and eq of a mic and pickup.

So! I'd love to see this whole she-bang including the pickup and mic go to another player! It would make the most sense considering the customization i've done.

I'm not doing much traveling by land these days and can't fly with this gear so have decided to part ways. I put these pieces together myself over quite a bit of time and they are all immaculate and road tested!

I'm flexible on price due to the large number of items, and will consider all offers,

Please let me know if you have any questions!

cheers!

Online fiddle lessons

I'd like to let you all know that I'm accepting students for online lessons in old-time fiddling. This is something I've been doing for a couple of years with pretty good results, using a combination of Skype, webcam, and exchange of MP3 files.

Resume:
My fiddling is strongly rooted in southern Appalachian regional styles, especially from regions in Kentucky, the Virginias, and North Carolina. Since the mid-80's I've performed and recorded with bands such as Leftwich, Higginbotham and Jackson, The Rhythm Rats, and Big Medicine, and a few years ago I released my first solo CD with Rayna Gellert, Paula Bradley, and Whitt Mead. I've been teaching fiddle for 20 years now, both individual students and in workshops like Augusta Heritage Arts Workshops, Mars Hill Old-Time Music Week, Alaska Fiddle Camp, and Ashokan Fiddle & Dance Camp. It's been a lot of fun, and it's very satisfying to help folks learn to play this wonderful music on the fiddle.

You can check out my FHO page for examples of my fiddling, and I've also linked to a few videos here that I have posted on YouTube.

If you're interested, contact me at kejack@gmail.com, and I'll send you more info. Also, I've just moved to the Chapel Hill, NC area, and I hope to be available for in-person lessons as soon as I have a teaching space.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

cheers,
Kenny

New Mechanical Fiddle Amp

I just posted a classified ad under "accessories" for my new "Fiddle Amp" mechanical sound amplifier and (probably) sound enhancer for fiddles, (patent pending). It is a simple little gadget consisting of just three pieces of treated paper and one staple and you would never guess that it is the result of years of experiments - but it is.

Fiddle Amp rests loosely in the sound opening where it takes inaudible sound surface waves off the top of the fiddle next to the sound opening, amplifies them mechanically many times and sends them to its audible sound emitter which hangs from its staple in the fiddle's sound chamber. The emitter amplifies the surface waves again and converts them into audible sound by its "flapping" motion, especially near its two sharp tips. The tips undoubtedly "flap" at harmonic frequencies because sound quality improved on our test fiddle and quality increased with increased tip sharpness. Expect sound quality to be excellent right away and improve with time as the emitter becomes more flexible with use.

Best news is that "Fiddle Amp" is only $15, postage paid. (If I get too many orders I will increase the price, hire somebody, or hide.) It is not on our website which is being updated now with related products for guitar, banjo and mandolin, all of which use a similar (but different) sound emitter and technology. Please watch for our website update.

Skyinbow

I've got a practically new 5 string green Skyinbow electric violin for sale. These were used in Riverdance and related shows. The sound is probably the most acoustic of any of the electrics, and the low C string makes it a viola and violin in one! I don't have the ability to show photos, but it's in perfect condition. They can be seen on the Electric Violin Shop website. Thank you, Steve Johnson.
